Hey, so I know there are a few gravel rally versions out there, but has anyone found a BUILD log of a gt86/frs/brz rally car?

no idea, but i got to drive a stock BRZ on the street and think it's a great little car, especially compared to where a lot of other cars have been going.

By a few you mean like two right?
The problem is, neither were built with privateers in mind and would cost a shit ton to try to replicate.
On the other hand, what is different about building any other car? They've certainly not been enough of them built or rallied to have any clue about weak points or such things. I think even the problems or breaking things the Nameless car has experienced have been not stock components.
I consider buying one from time to time.

There is, apparently, R3 homologation in the works (or at least being talked about) so at some point there will be some good build information and support out there. Then again, that will all come with the cost of development attached to the price tag, so it may not be everyone's idea of within budget.

Of course, Timm is only saying he wants to see a build log, not that he wants to build one.

I have been looking at building one, which is why I have my car up for sale. The cost can be what you make it. If you want to build a turbocharged sequential gearbox car like Nameless has, then of course you will need to dig deep in your wallet. If you want a G2 spec car (which is what I want) then it isn't that much more than building anything else I would be interested in once you get past buying the car (been looking at crashed ones myself but even then you are looking at $5-10k to get a suitable car ready to build). The upside for me is that they look cool, and it is far easier to get any parts for them than an older car.

Also keep in mind the electronics on these newer cars are fairly complex, and very integrated. For someone like myself this is no big deal. But if you are not into that sort of stuff you will want to leave the car VERY stock, or you might be hating life.

But I still love my Corolla, am starting to modify it again and don't have $5-10k laying around to buy another car to then start funding a build so the FR-S dream will have to wait a bit. Super neat car though and looks great.

What is your solution to this? iam in no hurry or place in my life to build a moden rally car, but when the kids are out of the house i might be. are you referring to engine mgmt intergrated to a comfort control module? i would suspect a standalone and full "hot rod" body harness would do. just curious.

Yeah my solution is take it all out and put motorsport stuff back in, but the engine is direct injection stock so you have to address that (or get rid of it) as well. You could get to a certain point where you simply wanted it for the shell and how it looks and the rest gets replaced with off the shelf bits from other cars (STi engine, solid rear axle type of build) but if that was the case then you have to ask yourself if the look of the shell was worth the price of admission or if another alternative would have gotten you the same rally car for $5-10k less.

Hey John. Yeah, that's kind of what I have been thinking. Nearly stock. I honestly am not a big fan of the complicated electronics of newer cars and think in the long run that is going to be the death of the automotive enthusiast. It'll all go to being stuff like the guys across the street from our lab that spend their time doing simple bolt on and cosmetic modification. Racing will be even further from normalcy than it already is.
I've watched Dave two or three different times now having electronics/wiring issues in his wife's BMW M3. Car is starting fine, install the exhaust and voila, won't crank. Only change was plugging in an O2 sensor. Six hours later, he's figured out the issue (ignition security thing if I recall). Few days later, he cuts the plug off that goes to the door electronics (not plugged into anything and doors are gutted) and voila, car won't start. Not sure if he's figured that one out yet...
The nice thing is that the BRZ is a Subaru and to me that would mean support from a local Subaru shop owned by a rallyist friend. The really nice thing is that it is RWD so that means ultimate fun factor driving machine for me.
I've seen a few drivers in the 20k range recently. Haven't looked much at wrecked cars though.

Bumping an old thread. I've been having wet dreams about building one of these into a rally car for a while, and having killed my current rally car this past weekend I now have an excuse to look into this more seriously.

Not sure if anyone knows specifically, but what electrical challenges are we talking about? I would probably leave the wiring/engine control as stock as possible for reliability's sake.
The only things I would like to remove as completely as possible are ABS and air bag related bits. If ABS module/sensors are needed to make traction control not freak out, I suppose I could leave all that in place, as I'd be running all of my own lines anyway, and just not connect them to the pump.
EGR related things would be nice to remove to have one fewer explody line through the car (I assume the canister is in the back on these), but not absolutely vital.
What else am I not thinking about?

What do you guys think of the suspension on the car, as far as rally purposes go? The easy/cheap route would be to slap some Bilstein HD's on the thing (which are available) for a grand and hit the stages. For beefier stuff, as far as I understand the geometry is similar to 08+ WRX, and hub-swaps have been done, which would result in huge variety of options. The biggest concern I'd probably have is the amount of travel in the rear.

Other than that, I would think that with the light weight and reasonably power engine, the car could be a decent G2 RWD car... and definitely get one way more ladies than a Fiesta
