Bringing the Boston based Xratty into ON: Help

I've worked out a deal with Tim in principle on his car in Boston. But I'm worried about how to bring it into Ontario whilst making sure MOT doesn't stamp it off road use only which will kill it's use in rally. Yes, I'm being a wimp on this, but I've heard to many stories of people bringing rally cars into Canada and having a bitch of a time getting them registered.

Can someone walk me through this and hold my hand and tell me it will be OK?

get the bill of sale, put it into a trailer and drive over the border?

it can't be that rough. 5 cars have departed from this very spot and all got into BC without problems.

Now once in I guess its going to need a "co-operative' person doing the inspection. You'll have to sniff around locally for that...

It's more than 15-years-old, it was originally sold in Canuckistan, don't think getting it in will be a problem. There are plenty of early 90's RHD Nissans running around up there. Pretty sure there's a not terrible website by the government giving guidelines. Probably too old to E-Test, if Ontario does Antique or Classic plates, that may be an option for a less-rigorous inspection/e-test.

Thanks for the input. John, from my understanding, AB and ON have the most stringent rules for bringing in cars. Once here (and not stamped off road only, can you tell this is the part that freaks me out) I can get a safety done at Can Jam, the folks that help Leo. I've talked to them and they're cool with that.

IIRC they don't really look at/inspect the car at the border, other than for the declared value at importation time for purposes of charging you duty. You can choose to import it as a road car (then you have to get it inspected), or as a parts car (can't be insured). I'm not sure how the off-road designation works, I assume it would be the same as parts car.

Here in BC, you have a year for a vehicle to pass "out of province inspection" to get it OK'd for road use, at an approved garage. If it takes longer than a year, I don't know what happens. I should probably look into that.

The key would be finding an inspection garage that understands rally cars. I don't know how much room for interpretation the out of province inspection process allows; I know the checklist is really picky. For example, the requirement for a fully working handbrake - if you've replaced the cable handbrake with a hydraulic handbrake is that ok? I don't know. Lots of little things like that.

I'm going to have to deal with this myself soon, so please post how it goes.

Hej John, if you know people in BC that have bought US rally cars and have imported & insured them in BC please pass along some names so I can do some research on getting my XRatti home. I hope I can finish the build up here. Save a set of those Supra diff mounts for me.

PS: Don't forget to file to export the car from the US a few days before taking it across.

Can Jam can do a regular in Province inspection. They can't do the RIV import inspection. The Ministry of Transportation recommends Canadian Tire (yeah, that will work out fine). Now trying to find a race friendly shop that can do the RIV inspection. Though maybe the Crappy Tire in Bancroft, home of the Rally of the Tall Pines could do it :-)?

You know what would save rally? If the sanctioning bodies would drop the 'needs plates' and cover liability on the transit stages through their insurer. Hell, I'd pony up $50 bucks for that per event so I didn't have to lie and cheat to get my rally car on the road.

What's the RIV import inspection about?
I thought it was just for value/duty/VIN check but maybe I'm wrong.

The only vehicle I've ever imported WA->BC was a road car, and there was no inspection at all, just some papers stamped.

You must be able to prove the age of the vehicle to the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA). Buses (including school buses) manufactured before January 1, 1971 are also exempt from the RIV program. Ahh right... let's see I imported a 1990 car in 2006 or 2007 so it would have been over 15 years I guess that's why I only had to do the out-of-province, and didn't have to do a separate RIV inspection.
