You know, I'm pretty much sold on not dying from a basular skull fracture.

But the reality is, the few bastards that hold the patents on the N&N restraint stuff piss me off for getting $500 profit on a $599 device. From a manufacturing standpoint, my $200 helmet has a lot more material cost than a H&N device.

Meh.
Products are made up of more than the materials used to produce them. Beyond the obvious ones of labour, 'overhead', packaging, inventory holding costs, and 'reasonable' mark-up for retailers you then have the amortized costs of research and development, legal, and liability insurance costs for the manufacturer.
You might think some of these costs shouldn't be passed on to the consumer... you're wrong. These are all costs of doing business and are passed along.
I've been through a few similar accidents both with and without a HANS device. MAJOR difference in soft tissue injury between them. (and my back isn't broken either)

blah blah blah stating the basic Business class 050 First week of Jr College level boilerplate

We can safely presume that the cynical schmucks have recovered their huge R&D costs etc about 10 years ago..

And probably their kick-back to theplace "approving" and the place lobbying to make them mandatory.. Ogh wait, its the same place..whatever They're raping people.

Makes sense to me. The co-driver is always busy reading a book and generally distracting the hell out of the driver, while the driver is paying attention to the road and can see a crash coming and therefore unbuckle his seatbelt before the impact so he can be safely thrown clear of the crash.

That's why I leave the chin strap loose too! I knew a guy named goober and he had a cousin Clem who said his uncle had to lay his Hawg down and didn't break his (pencil) neck cause his helmet done flowed away.. So I ben leving my chin strap loose ever since, duh yup duh yup!
We al know that all the weight of a helmet will snap yore neck like (snap) that!

Yadda, yadda, yadda. I work for an R&D firm and understand the costs in bringing something to market and protecting your intellectual property. No, you can't sell one for $25 and stay in business.

But as a consumer of racing safety equipment, I still think the H&N devices are overpriced for what they are. I can get a not-terrible fire suit that meets the rules for less than $400. I can get a comfortable helmet that meets the rules for $200. But $600 seems to be the entry price for the item that would appear to have the lowest manufacturing cost (at least in the molded plastic variety).

You have to figure in the cost of Tylonal and chiropratic visits into the savings of Hans cost. Codriver vs driver. Codriver just got at least $60.00 back on the hans cost!! Driver has a stiff neck and a head ache from hell!

Hans started lobbying in the 80s. They didn't bring a product to market UNTIL they knew it would become mandatory and they'd nearly have a monopoly on it.
I don't really care. It's one more thing to spend money on.
