rally wheels have larger inner diameter?
March 30, 2014 04:05PM
Curious if rally wheels have a larger inner diameter than say a run of the mill aftermarket wheel (like Enkei 92) for brake clearance. Having a possible issue with clearing the caliper and hub assembly in the rear.

I don't know if you could say they ALL do. But after a brake upgrade to my subie, the stock rims no longer fit, and the Compmotive did.

Compmotive rims provided more clearance than other rims on my golf. As Andrews said, may not be all but at least Compmotive appears to try to make more room.

In the long run reality always wins.

That is often the goal of a rally rim.
What diameter disc are you working with? Bigger than 285mm is usually hard to fit under a stock wheel. Bigger than 299 mm is hard to fit under anything in 15" diameter.
What is total radius from center of hub to outside of brake caliper?
We have a laser scan of a Team Dynamic.

my BRAID TA's have more clearance than any of the stockers have had.

its an 11.6" rotor in the rear.... so 295mm rotor. ill see what the caliper adds.

With that diameter you MIGHT be able to fit under a motorsport wheel.
Wheel offset and brake hat offset do have some effect, but that's usually more to do with the caliper hitting the wheel spoke.

One other thing to keep an eye on are the trailing link and the tabs on the knuckle for the toe-arms, etc, assuming IRS. For example, the limiting factor WRT wheels on an Evo X (after you've shrunk the brakes) is the toe-arm tab on the rear knuckle. It won't fit inside any 15" wheel, forcing you to run a low offset to keep it to the inside of the wheel or come up with a completely new knuckle (which is probably the way to go, at the same time that you dump the AYC).

yea the trailing link mount is the other thing i have ran into issues with, however, low offset wheels with rear drive isn't too big a deal

You guys are both married, as am I, so I guess we can all joke about it. But if you actually want to get laid, leave the 30-year-old Scandanavian shit-box or "zer-ratti" at home. Just sayin'.

I dunno, but Grant sure married somebody with Finnish blood and tolerates, if not encourages his vehicular shenanigans with XR4s. But she also likes Subarus if I can believe Grant's FaceSpace feed.

My wife is something like 1/4 Swede, 1/4 Finn, and a bunch of Scottish. She likes Volvos and XR4s…OK, she tolerates my XR4s, and would gladly trade her '97 Volvo 850 GLT commuter mobile for an '03 Outback Limited with leather and a 5-speed…although she DID trade her '04 Outback Limited with leather and 5-speed for a Toyota Sienna. smiling smiley

If anything, JV's beautiful bride (who I never met since I think she was in China when I was last in Seattle), should be totally into the Asian wheels…except don't the Chinese want the Japanese dead or vice versa? Wait, DON'T MENTION THE WAR…no that was the European theater and the Germans…

wut? Who am I, why am I here?

Yeah, a lot of aftermarket wheels, especially motorsport oriented ones, are designed to maximize the size of brake rotor/caliper you can fit in a given area.

Ask the former monk Kevin Hawkinson what happened when he got a nice red Xratty.
