Apropos of nothing, does anyone else get the idea that the designer of the Miata engine bay just went "Hooray! It all fits!" and then went home?

Having to take the front wheel off just to change the oil filter (and then it still makes a mess) is just ridiculous. And I hope I never have to change the starter.

Yes, I have a Miata. It's a terrific track car. And it's cute.

I need some of your Ovlov parts. Don't give 'em away. And I may move into your shop, whether you like it or not.

Huh? Take the wheel off to change the oil? What gen?

I've got a 95 and never had that problem. Of course my arm just barley fits between the intake tubes to get to the filter...

I disbelieve. Vid or it doesn't happen. I just tried that and there is no way no how my arm will fit in there.

And mine's 95 too. Stop copying my cars!

If you have a non-ac car it's very easy to remove it from above. If not, the second best way is to turn the wheels to the left and reach behind the right wheel to remove the filter.

While there are some issues using a transverse engine in the Miata, it's mostly well laid out and easy to work on.

I've got a 94. Not a problem with the filter, but I did remove the ac. Great fucking car.

Is there room for a filter relocation??

I mean, obviously, this just "solves" the problem you're bringing up, but can you at least make it easier on yourself?

Sucks they did that though. 94 4 runners also had the filter in a REALLY stupid spot. Ours had AC and you had to take the front skid plate thing off, reach sort of behind and around the compressor (or suspension? We got rid of it a LONG time ago) and then UNDER the other part. It was ridiculous.

Yes, there're remote filter kits, but considering it's something I only do once every N-thousand miles, it's much easier to just take the wheel off, change the filter, and then rush inside to gripe about it.

Likewise always changed mine from above in my old NA, but I have girly arms and I ALWAYS got oil all over the damn place when I did it. Good thing it was a rarely driven summer/slalom car so I only did it once or twice a year.

Jiffy Lube $19.99 oil change.
If you want a specific brand of oil and filter, bring your own.

For $20 it's worth it to make your problem someone else's problem!

Just make sure you mark the filter and visually check to see if they actually changed it. You also run the risk of them putting it on with hulk-hands. Hands up those who have ever had to screw-driver a filter that a garage had put on a car?
