Pastrana Tire Change
May 05, 2014 04:05PM
So I saw this photo on Instagram.

http://instagram.com/p/nmCLeChQcx/

I have two questions.

1. Does anyone know what kind of jack that is and where you would get one?

2. The newer Open cars have this middle jack point that appears to allow both wheels on one side of the car to be off the ground for tire rotations, etc. Isn't think an illegal service? I thought the rules stated that a car must be on jack stands? I guess this could be extended to all tire changes that are done on a transit. Curious what the rule nit pickers thought about this.

Reread and realized you had a two-part question.

The jackstand rule is well-intentioned but poorly worded. Both R-A and NRS just have it simply as "when more than one wheel is off the ground". On many cars (certainly mine), it is physically impossible to just raise one wheel. Does this mean I have to carry a set of jackstands with me where ever I go? Yes, I suppose. But I don't, and while changing a tire no one's going under the car.

You know that the rules state that you're supposed to have a fire extinguisher manned when you refuel right? Yet at some events you're also allowed to refuel at gas stations along the way. Technically, that means that one of you has to hold a fire extinguisher while you're refilling at the local Conoco on transit.

Some things are silly if you want to pick at them, but mostly it's just not an issue.

I've seen three jack points on cars since I got involved a dozen years ago. Nothing new.

As for the Jack Stand question... have a read of the rules:

Rally America 2014 rule book
Servicing is defined as either any repair or maintenance of a
competing vehicle by any service crew personnel, or repairs or
maintenance of a competing vehicle by the driver and/or co-driver
using items not carried in the competing vehicle.
Bolding is mine.
So, it is clear that if the competing crew is using items carried in the car, then it is not considered service.
The only requirement for jack stands is in 7.11. SERVICE CREWS AND SERVICING section of the rules, which means on that basis it wouldn't apply to tire changes by the competing crew.

I've been jacking up a2 and a3 golves and our e30s from the middle with a normal jack to get two wheels off the ground forever. That jack looks like a fancy bilstein or hi-lift which will get the job done a lot cheaper. Because grassroots.

Really? I actually looked at UK retail pricing and rounded down to nearest $100 after applying a GBP to USD conversion. Figured I'd save you shipping by including it in my next big order.

Thanks for that. I always wondered what the loop hole was for tire changes. I guess I just did not read the service definition close enough.

Well yes I am using a craftsman floor jack in my rally car. I know the horror of the extra weight. I may change to merc pin stand jack if I even get around to making pin stands.
