Alaska

Is a great place to visit. Went on a cruise with the wife up to Juneau, around Hubbard Glacier, down to Sitka, then down to Ketchican. Awsome place.

I like to spend time in Alaska too. I have not noticed any more or less alcoholics then in Seattle.

In the long run reality always wins.

Having lived just outside of Fairbanks for an entire 7 months in my childhood, I do believe that Alaska is for visiting, not for living. Or at least not that area, it is evil.

However, the drive up the AlCan is one of my fondest memories ever (even if I was just a passenger). And laying in the snow and staring directly up at the bottom of the northern lights was very cool too.

Mixed up place, Alaska. Land of churches, liquor stores, and strip clubs.

I want to do the next winter Alcan5000 in 2012.

They also do a summer one.....2010.

10 days, 5000 miles, $2000, includes hotels.

Alrighty, let's see if I can roll all this into one. Past Winter ALCAN 5000 Rallies have seen stripping at the Arctic Circle by both sexes, drank most of the liquor out of several bars during the overnight stays in very nice hotels and some competitors have had religious experiences.

I would highly recommend doing an ALCAN. Summer ones are suitable for a great drive with a spouse. Not alot of time to stop and shop for trinkets but you'll see places in the far North that are truly awe inspiring and drive some great roads and travel with like minded crazy people.

Winter ALCANs are for serious driving and are generally more competetive. How often can you drive as fast as you dare on a frozen river for nearly a hundred miles? Drive ON the Arctic Ocean? and stay in a nice hotel at the end of the day?It must be a good event, it has been going on since the 80's and has at least a dozen teams that have run it more than twice. Well lets see. $2k, i can come up with that. But I dunno about prepping Jackalope II for that. Maybe the suburban?

While in Sitka, we looked for the mating polar bear bar, but couldnt find it.

Max- The money you will spend on fuel driving the 'burb would be more than enough to do the Jackalope up right. Depending on whether you are planning to do the summer or winter (or Both!) you have plenty of time. The next event is the summer ALCAN and it is next summer (2010) and the next winter event is 2012, so you have LOTS of time! The Anti-Cristy and I are headed out west again so we can visit and look over the Jackalope. See you in August!!

Heh, 'sis (& B-inlaw + nephews) live up in Cordova... Incredibly beautiful country, best taken in small doses... I've always said that the only things to do in AK are to drink, fuck, and hunt/fish...not necessarily in that order. ;-)
