My current XC rig is a fully rigid 29er. The other "fun" bike has 6in of travel and weighs 29lbs (21in frame). Oddly, for the "technical trails" I use the rigid bike. If something is going to be fast and flowy with jumps, then I take out the squishy bike. In regards to your Calfornia comment. One of my normal riding buddies drives an orange Porsche 912 that his dad handed down to him (owned since new). Thule roof racks op top. It looks absolutely fantastic with 2 downhill bikes on the roof ![]() And yes, he is from California. |

Is that what passes for light nowadays? My FS bike was given commuter duty because it weighed that much and I was spoiled from riding a 21lb bike on the trails. Hopping onto 2'-waist high rock shelfs is way more fun on a light bike than some tank. (and don't get me started on frame sizing... can't stand anything bigger than a 19" and prefer a 17"...) Yeah, I've got two mountain bikes. a 6 inch Full suspension for bouncing down hills, and a dirt jump hard tail that I dont jump because I'm terrified the bike will break (seriously, its a sketchy bike haha). It's the bike that made me love hardtails. Now I want to build a trail hard tail! I love how responsive they are and popping out of corners. So much fun.
Also, I seem to be doing it right then. I drive to the trail head in a car worth FAR less than the bike ![]() Welcome to the cult of JVL drink the koolaid or be banned. |

Mt Trails in Merrit BC, had a few stages where in my very short geared VW I did not make it out of 3rd gear. One of the Shelton Stages we ran a few years back was so narrow you mowed down saplings every time the car got sideways. DooWops are a very nice balance when crain creek is used.
In ride a very old Klein Attitude Hardtail because I like to go up hill and I am old. Mtb's did not have suspension when I started racing them. Technical does not mean a speed to me, it means the skill level required to set a good stage time is high. Skill should not be confused with bravery. In the long run reality always wins. |

I ride small frames too, prefer hardtails and think my 21lb hardtail is heavy. Did I get old when I wasn't looking? I also prefer a well sorted hardtail on skinnies for street riding, makes things like stairs an option. Wouldn't average speed be a good descriptor of a stage? |
