Is Haldex like a Ford version of DSG/DCT? Asking for a friend that definitely reads all the automotive magazine magazine, has certainly watched ever episode of Top Gun and the Evo vs bobsled race of Top Gear and has only three times got excited about the random Ford Falcon in St Ignatius, MT thinking it's a Cortina and is still saddened every time he drives south...

Haldex is a manufacturer, they make the rear diff assemblies for maybe 90% of the transverse AWD vehicles on the road today. They incorporate a electrically controlled hydraulic clutch pack thingy so that no center differential is used.

Honda has a similar system they do in-house that is really good for getting barky, Toyota sometimes uses an actual center diff in the trans (like Mitsubishi did/does?) and the Focus RS uses a GKN drive, not Haldex.

The interesting thing (to me) about the Volvo controller for the Haldex is that it is apparently RPM based. The test procedure is to coast through a tight turn at slow speed, then hold the engine over 3000-4000 RPM and do the same tight turn and see if it feels like the car binds to a stop.

Ah gotcha. I've never had or considered a sideways mount engine.

So did we just loop back to checklists are awesome?

Hmm.

Would you believe... I drove an XR4Ti last weekend and it sucked?

I will kick myself later for not buying it. Completely unmolested '88 with no rust. But, the paint was shit, the interior was trashed, and most of the electricals were inoperative. Not at a good place car-wise right now to tackle it. I'm mostly depressed that I'll probably never get a chance at another one since all of them have bad rot or have been hacked.

How many rust free ones do you want? 2? 4? 5?

There are 2,020.55 miles from Seattle to Cleveland in east direction and 2,442 miles (3,930.02 kilometers) by car, following the I-90 route. Seattle and Cleveland are 1 day 11 hours far apart, if you drive non-stop. This is the fastest route from Seattle, WA to Cleveland, OH. The halfway point is Wasta, SD.

Easy..get on the 1-90..turn west...set the cruise on 75 and come get one.

Want one 100% stock. No intercooler, no Thunderbird computer, no SAAB radiator, needs A/C still in place, complete interior, etc.

And the expense of taking a week off of work and driving a truck 4000 miles is still probably more expensive than that car would have cost me.

(oh yeah and one of the wiper arms broke off in my hand when I went to snap it against the windshield)

I'm still suffering from 0% regret in getting out of the XR4ti.

Awwwww.. no AC but it is otherwise bone stock...STOCK!!! Fresh dash..No rust..That's worth some time in truck..Only 50 hours driving time at a reasonable 80.
Even has under 40 miles on nice rebuild engine.

Has clear-coat mange..
But stock..
And no rust
Did i mention that?

Dream car checklist?

A helicopter or a chauffer for commuting.
Saab 96, because smoking a Mk 1 GTI in JV's old street car is burned in my brain
A magic wand to make the Merkur always run like it does when it's happy
Any RS Escort
RWD Volvo with manual gearbox
A tow pig that is dead-ass reliable
An AWD Sienna that magically takes care of itself for the family

I'm pretty sure a 2004 Yukon Denali hits at least three of your checkpoints.
I'd rather have a jet than a chopper.

There is a helipad at work, although since's it's a one-holer on the roof of the building, Dean would be pissed if I used it...I could get my private pilot fixed-wing license through the flight club at work, but I need another expensive hobby like a hole in the head. Although I really should try out the Cirrus SR20.

True. Sorry Dean. Dean can park his chopper at the park. True story, a doctor friend was flying his helicopter from his hospital to the airport to catch his jet and had some trouble so landed it in the city park. He happened to live across the street so he went home and grabbed some tools and fixed whatever was wrong then resumed flight to the airport. I am pretty sure he had a hell of a time proving that he actually had a problem and wasn't just stopping by home on the way to the airport with the FAA. They and the city were not happy with him.
