Seen this one yet?

http://thenewspaper.com/news/23/2302.asp

I'm not even sure how to respond to this stuff.

The article links to an older article...

http://thenewspaper.com/news/18/1831.asp

That mentions stock evos and sti(s) getting citations.

As a resident of the Glorious People's Republic of California I am stunned by garbage like this.

FTA

"If you're not into street racing, why would you need that?" Riverside Police Traffic Sergeant Skip Showalter asked an enthusiast during a similar crackdown last year. "Why would you want more power going to your car?"

How about because I want it and CAN pay for it. Of couse I'm not 18 anymore so perhaps I won't have this problem. But If I let my kid drive the car I'm building, will they crush it without proper evidence.

Wow.. where do you start with that one?

I don't live in California.. so I don't know if there is a street racing problem or not.. but man crazy. For starters most parking lots are private property.

Don't know what to say really :|

Here is a case where lawyers actually NEED to get involved. Cars parked in a lot is not a street race. If they follow some cars from said location and FIND a street race, hey, fair game. But this crap is going too far.

Of course, running around riced out without a stack of valid CARB exemptions in your glove box is just asking for it.

Glad to see there aren't any problems with theft, murder, assault, gangs, hard drug use, corporate corruption so that modified cars are the biggest concern. Typical law enforcement, go after the easy low-effort enforcement instead of crime that really has an impact on society. Just like going after people speeding instead of people weaving through traffic, putting on make-up, drunk text messaging, etc.

I've heard Ontario is Canada's California for street racing enforcement.

You *hope* "only in california"... So. The 4th and 5th amendments don't apply in California anymore, and the 2nd is almost invalidated. What's next?

In reading a bit more from this site its apparent to me that the site is focused on bending whatever truly happens into some kind of conspiracy. The problem is Street Racing Kills People. Yet these punks continue to endanger the lives of people on a daily basis, specifically in California.

"According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 804 people were killed in racing-related crashes between 2001 and 2006. California had 188 of those deaths, with Texas second at 128."

The problem is when people continuously congregate in order to arrange street races, and people continually die as a result of these incidents. No one wants that to happen.

Here is another report on the incident, with video:
http://cbs2.com/local/Riverside.Street.Racing.2.687707.html

BTW, Consented to Warrantless searches are legal in America...always have been, always will be.

Once again, if you don't want to get in trouble, don't do something illegal, it's a pretty simple concept. If you don't like the idea that something is illegal, then make it legal, its America people.

Riverside, CA used to have a nice road course for legitimate racing...but it got lost to suburban sprawl.

And never consent to searches!

jesus, are you for real? these people were congregated, so therefore they MUST have been about to street race and kill people?

you know, I'm sure there's some great stats about women killed by drunken boyfriends or husbands, so looking at your signature, I think the next time you have a bit of whiskey, you need to be arrested for domestic violence ASAP.

______________________________________________-

Lets see, 188 people killed from street racing over 5 years. Lets be generous and call it 40/year. How many people are killed every year from drunk driving in CA???? from people that can't drive an SUV right on the high way?

How much money did that article say the LAPD were given for this campaign? over $2.0M??? You don't think that money and effort would have a slightly better result if it was put towards catching drunk drivers and soccer moms putting make-up on in 5000lbs SUVS going 75mph in the fast lane?

"sent more than one hundred police officers to surround a gathering of automotive enthusiasts"

I know 100 cops that need a transfer to NYC to do some real police work.

They got what they deserved. If you have never been at these "meetings" you don't know what goes on. These punks make donuts, lots of late night noise, littering and yes - they do race. And crash, and get killed. And people blame cops "doing nothing".
They also were trespassing.
Close to my house there's a popular "Saticoy Race Way". They used to come 3-4 times a week around 11pm and race until 3am. I counted between 60 and 80 race cars going by my house. Some on slicks! Plus 200-300 spectators in equally loud cars, spinning wheels at every stop sign. Nothing could stop these guys. Cops came, gave a chase and got one or two but most got away and came back the same night!
Then, finally, they started to confiscate cars and viola! - no more racing...
I've street raced, a lot, but never in town. We went to a remote "Mulholland Race Way" or up to an other quiet canyons.
Yes, things here are not like in wilderness where moose outnumber people.
BTW - that paper is as reliable as what Pete Morris uses for his garbage.

hey, if they're breaking laws, then go for it.

but just based on the stats alone, I stand by my statement that the cops have better things to do than spend +$2M to stop 40 street racers from killing themselves in a year.

shit, 40+ people die every year from falling down stairs. more than that from doing dumber shit than street racing. And at least these guys are doing it at 3am.....forget the retard that tries to pull on me at 8:30am while I'm driving to work in traffic. Where's a cop then?

Jon, Grow the fuck up.

Why shouldn't law enforcement crack down on completely preventable deaths? These kids are grouping up specifically to race, gamble or to watch racing take place, I'm not sure that you are familiar enough with the scene.

I was involved in these activities when I was a little younger and a little dumber. It would start with a gathering of cars that looked like a show. Some wagers would be placed, some shit would be talked and we would go race...on an open public road with hundreds of spectators. It was dangerous and stupid. Eventually the scene got so big that there would be a number of people taking bets, open drug use and sales, questionable vehicles showing up (see stolen), and eventually the authorities began cracking down after a few accidents and close calls. Fortunately I never got caught or was involved in any of the really elicit activities, but I watched as the scene evolved into a mess of poor choices, horrible ideas, and bad people.

These guys don't kill themselves, they race on open public roads, they kill themselves, the other racers, the spectators, innocent bystanders, and the motoring public...Jesus, it wouldn't be a problem then.

Jon, you are acting like the CHP isn't getting money for DUI enforcement...trust me the good majority of officers out at night are looking for DUI's, there is grant funded overtime as well...oh dear god, they are spending money on DUI's they should be spending money on catching murderers and rapists instead those bastards!!!!

If you want to get all high and mighty, stick up for people that need to be stuck up for instead of a group of dirtbags.

Once again, don't like something, change it...this is AMERICA. It's funny Jon because you'll just continue to bitch whine and moan instead of acting on it, your just frustrated you can't make "illegal in California" mods to your car.

Re: Only in Freakin California

oh crap, Tom....you're one of these 'well, back in my day....blah, blah, blah'....? Yeah, nice argument....

if you actually read what I wrote correctly, I'm not standing up for any of those riced out punks in the article, nor am I commenting on the 'scene'. I couldn't give a shit about that scene.

I was talking about HOW the police basically entrapped them and then treated them all the same, and based on obvious 'profiling' handed out BS tickets. ("Illegal modifications"?? please...what's illegal about a some crappy chin spoilers, an FMIC kit, BOV or intake? Unless these cops were getting under the cars and looking for removed catalytic converters (federal crime), performing smog tests on the spot....BS)

They may as well have walked into any bar at 1:30am, searched everyone, and the people that had car keys on them got arrested for 'well, you might go drive a car drunk, so here's a DUI ticket." Don't like it?? Too bad, see you in court.

^^^ THAT would actually prevent a lot more deaths. But you can't do that can you? You can't arrest someone on what they 'might' do....but that's what happened here....they didn't actually catch them in the act of street racing. At least that would have been a better sting operation, had they scoped out WHERE these kids actually race and then busted them there IN THE ACT.

At the very least, give'm a ticket for something that will stick, like Tresspassing. oh wait, the owner would actually have to press charges for that....no, that won't work, no one was complaining.

and once again, I didn't say the cops aren't getting money to prevent DUIs....I just made the point it would be better spent doing other things. You can add 'in my opinion' if it makes you feel better.

oh, and speaking of illegal mods....if you're ok with what they did, how about if it was a parking lot full of rally cars about to go on stage? They still have to drive on public roads to get to/from stages....not a single rally car will have a DOT approved 3-point seat belt in it....ticket for that....and a ticket for driving w/o a seat belt. And forget the open class cars....fuck, just town them away and have them compacted, no trial, no judge, no reason, just do it. Don't you know people can get killed in a rally? jeeze man!?

I'm not defending what those kids had in mind while in that parking lot....but sitting around a parking lot isn't a crime, I DON'T CARE HOW GUILTY THEY LOOKED: THAT'S WHY THIS IS AMERICA.

Jon, do you even know what entrapment means?

The problem is they are gathering for an illegal purpose, this isn't entrapment....Now if the officers were challenging them to races, that would be entrapment. They choose to gather at the same place weekly to go racing and no one in their community wants to see that happen, hence the "millions" spent in enforcement and education programs. Next your going to say that the police shouldn't be going after mob and gang gatherings, because we are infringing their right to steal and kill.

How are these BS tickets/arrests/impounds when they are breaking the law? It's easy, don't steal cars to make yours nice, don't alter your VIN to try and sneak by emissions requirements or hide it, and don't break the law. Don't like a law, then change it.

I wouldn't give a rats ass if I got a ticket for the belts in my rally car...I would gladly pay the extra $124 an event to race, I think those are probably one of the few mods that actually are "letter of the law" illegal.

It's obvious that you have no clue what you are talking about if you think that any car would be impounded based on their modifications. You continue to give out poor and our ridiculous comparisons to attempt to stick up for people that don't need to be stuck up for. BTW, sitting in a parking lot is Illegal, it's called trespassing if the owner says so, lord knows the police would never contact a business owner to see if they want a bunch of hooligans in their parking lot after hours.

The problem with this story is there are little to no facts involved...other than a bunch of hood rats got driven out of their local race GTG spot.

Re: Only in Freakin California

I definitely agree with your last sentence. Around here (NorCal) there are weekly meets in a few public places (the 'Krispy Cream' is the big suby place to meet Tuesdays) where folks DON't congregate to race, they just hang out, check out each other's cars, whatever. I'm using that as my basis since that's what the article said they were doing.

If this particular group in Riverside, CA has a history of car racing, and specific individuals have priors/warrants, on the top 10 list, whatever....then sure, nail'm to the wall, I'm sure they deserve it.

and yes, I used 'entrapment' loosely winking smiley but hey, it wouldn't take much for a cop to get on NASIOC, set up a 'meet' and then do exactly what happened in Riverside.

and I also agree with stolen parts, changing VIN, etc...but again, the article doesn't go into those deails, so I wouldn't assume that's what happened, but whatever....yeah, kind of got annoyed about it w/o too much info.

peace out.
