Just be glad you've never dealt with the mid 90s Mercedes super long studs that have a small bolt head area, then a narrow shaft to the wide conical seat then the threads. If some meat head zaps these down with an air gun, the head snaps off when you try to loosen, and the conical seat stays! Then you get to spend hours with drills, torches, plasma cutters and explosives getting the conical seat out so you can remove the wheel! Fortunately I was just a witness to this happening, although I did get to mount a tire on the spare rim while my friend Chris was cutting and zapping and swearing for FIVE HOURS to get the TWO that snapped! And we were using hand tools to remove the bolts!

I'm positive there are more annoying things out there, trust me. It's just the absolute stupidity that gets me. Why anyone would think that's a good design when the studs on the spindle design works just fine is beyond me. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

It's my girlfriends car that I don't have the time to work on. Also it barely won over a Saab 99 or Volvo, both of which I'd much rather wrench on. In fact theres a small chance she'll sell it and buy a 99 I'm sure it's a pretty easy fix.. but it's my girlfriends daily driver. the bit about staying away from german cars is just a joke.. although I'm not running out to buy one or knocking on my neighbours doors who own german cars with tools in hand The original post was just to see if there was something good about it.. other than VW saving 20cents a car. No Volvo I've ever owned. Granted the newest was 1972. "Pre-1988, SAAB used lugs and nuts for the 900/99 with a lug pattern 4x114.3mm, or 4x4.5", 71mm centerbore The 9000 always used a bolt system with a lug pattern of 4x108mm, or 4x4.25" Post-1987 [1988 model year], the 900 used the 9000 hubs/brakes with bolts NG900, 9^3, 9^5 are all 5x110mm" I didn't know that.. but I wouldn't buy a Post 1988 saab Man it seems like newer Volvos have gone to it as well.. why? I think Volvo and some Saab are the only ones who don't use 'em.
VW has 14mm bolts now. I used to hate 'em, but now I kinda like 'em. The threads are protected so you rarely if ever wreck the threads trying to remove the bolts if the car sat without hubcaps for more than a few months.
