Am I turning into a redneck? (X Games and Nascar content)
August 04, 2008 11:04AM
I don't know, I kind of went to the darkside this weekend and turned myself into a Redneck subaru lover...

Went to the Nascar race in Montreal on Friday and Saturday and watched the X Games on Sunday!

The Nascar was not so bad since it's a road course and the even raced in the rain!!! I kind of like it and I even bought a cap! Not so much jumps (except a few who went high the curbs) the but a lot of sideway action with the wet track!

I really liked the X games too! I know it's not real rally and I'm fine with that. But I enjoyed watching the show. I think it would be even better if it was not part of the X games though since it gives a prententious and superstar side to rally, whih it doesn't have (or need) in America.

I felt bad for ACP, he was the only non subaru, but he will probably end up making more money that way! If so, good for him, but that must have been a scary moment!

Well please don't shoot me! I do that only once a year!

I was there and it was entertaining as hell. it's not rally but it's rally cars and the same crowd is there (rally peeps, service, drivers/codrivers) so it's still fun.

And the cars with the 40mm restrictor.......holy shit. Completely different animals.

If X Games wants some REAL action, they should make a Euro-style rallycross competition. Watching all that metal get twisted in a stadium without any wheel-to-wheel action made me want to cry. All those suitcases filled with cash...gone.

I didn't. If you're going to fuck up a jump like that, would you rather short it, or go long? I'd rather go long. He did the same thing last year as most probably remember, though it was in practice. He didn't even do the practice this year. Part of me wonders if he did it on purpose. Knows he probably won't win it, but with his roll over, he's probably quadrupled the amount of coverage for his sponsors.

The Johnson/Wimpey near upset over Block/Gelsomino was classic.

Everyone watching in our group thought that the Block/Pastrana race was set up. Block's car was a little more beaten, Pastrana's was fine. Give him an easy run and let the better shape car to go up against Tanner in the final round, not to mention better quality tires as he in essence has one less run on the tires than Foust.

40mm restrictors were the standard until 2004. CHCA hill climbs we don't use restrictors at all.

Tell me Grant...if your car was running but you knew it would expire soon...would you roll up to the line to try to start, or resign yourself to losing and just sit there.

Also, about ACP, if you knew that you could potentially crash your car because it didn't fly nice like the Subarus and not get your sponsors - who likely paid for their entire trip out there - ANY airtime at all by balling the car up in practice ala Lagemann, would the thought not enter your mind 'gee, I'd better try to get them some airtime even if the risk of not getting the jump right is substantially higher since I didn't practice?'. Just a thought.

That'd certainly be in my thoughts were I in his shoes. And you never know, they could have explicitly TOLD HIM as a requisite for sponsorship not to practice the jump to guarantee that there was - at minimum - SOME coverage of the car on TV. If that was the case, a very shrewd, smart move by NOS/K&N if you ask me.

To think he shorted the jump intentionally to crash the car and possibly put himself in considerable danger....are you serious? I know you said you were kidding around on SS, but since you wrote it here too, doesn't seem like you are.

Putting Block's car on the start line was SMART team strategy. Saved Pastrana a race and guaranteed that he makes it to the next round.

I don't see why ACP would purposely launch it short. But, I fear endos and writing off shells. Safer to over do it, than lawn dart the bank in front of the landing ramp. Probably easier said than done. Why not run the evo IV?

What? I can't kid on two different forums? Do you really think that was considerable danger? Next time I think they need to jump through some rings of fire.

The Block team orders was everyone else's initial assumption. I went and grabbed another beer then went outside for a smoke during that run.

I liked Chrissy's delivery of the notes. That really made me laugh.

If they shorted the jump any further, nosedived, and hit the face of the far side of the jump at 30+ mph, or somehow rolled back onto their roof into the gap (with or without another car speeding through the gap), then yes, I'd consider that considerable danger.

Even my butt was puckered like mad and I was sitting safely in my seats about 7 rows back from the jump.

Did you see how bad Matthew shorted it the one time! There's a pic on specialstage. Jeremy sent me a text right before they're run against Ken that was like, the jump has been mean to us the past three runs. We're up against Block next so hopefully we'll have better luck. They super shorted it once, then flew long during the first heat. Seemed okay against Block though.

Grant, I did see it. It was nuts!!

When it happened, it didn't look that bad as the picture, but for a split section it looked like they weren't going to make it.
