my friend/neighbor has a kia rio and it's been a really reliable little car for him, he bought it new and has had it for years now (can't remember how many, but he's been in Oregon for about 4 or 5 now and he bought it before moving up here)

and I don't think it's a bad looking car, it's simple and I like simple

but I don't think I want a kia, although, don't they have a new little hatchback out now?

as always I gotta shout out for ze germans.

2006-?? Rabbit 2.5L 5cyl has some decent snort, reasonable economy, and can be had for cheap(ish).

http://autos.nwsource.com/listingOverview.aspx?c=1&did=387&vin=WVWAB71K69W038530

pluses to modern vw's:

good driver's cars, not squishy (drive a stock base impreza... ugh.), good "feel", nice interior, good fit and finish. reasonable power (ie not 100% boring point a to point b cars).

minuses to modern vw's:

not as overly all-out reliable as your asian competition (that scion will probably never break, ever. if you put oil in it and refrain from crashing into ancient steel tanks winking smiley)

probably mid 20's fuel economy, not as good as smaller displacing things.

plus, hatchbacks are so awesome for fitting stuff in. very useable practical things. fold the seats down, move your 36" ancient tube tv that otherwise requires a truck, throw a bike or two in the back and go out for a ride, etc.

I just did a clutch on one of those (well, an '03 model) and the total job was close to $2k.

What happened was the throwout bearing is PLASTIC. No kidding. It's all plastic except for the ring on the end that actually contacts the diaphragm, the ball bearings, and the hooks that hold it to the clutch fork.

The plastic throwout bearing is "splined" where it slides on the input shaft sleeve (what do you call that thing anyway?) presumably to minimize contact for whatever reason. This allows the *aluminum* sleeve to corrode, and sieze the plastic throwout bearing. (I need to keep repeating that, PLASTIC) The plastic throwout bearing then keeps the clutch partially engaged, killing the clutch, and the constant load on the bearing melts the throwout bearing, because it is PLASTIC.

To replace the sleeve, you need to buy the entire case half, since it's part of the casting. The boneyard trans we got for it had had the case half replaced fairly recently, and the also-recently-replaced throwout bearing was in sad shape, so we popped a new one on...

I used to think Hyundais were neat. No longer.

The little clutch spline tool said "FORD 20" on it, though, which made me laugh. It's a Hyundai, with a Daewoo (Opel) engine, and a Mazda trans, apparently.

I would love to, but I just can't afford one. In fact, looking at how much the cost of living has gone up, I'm really going to try to stay under 10k. I can't imagine I'm going to get very much for my car, which means a loan. I live alone and don't have anyone to help out with the bills, if I had a roommate, then yeah, but I don't (I'm not sure a nicer car would be worth having to share my space and sanity unless it was a relationship. I'd love to have one of those! But I am not so blessed.)

I love purple!

Right now, nothing. I just got the money from my insurance and the loan from my credit union and now I can start really looking.

But, I still won't be able to daily drive whatever it is I end up with. My knee is still giving me trouble and it could be a while before using a clutch doesn't bother it.

Rally Car:
Mazdaspeed3 and Mazda Protege

Re: suggestions for a "new" car, my tibby got all smooshed up

My daily driver is a Protege. I have 96000 miles on it and change the oil occasionally out of guilt. I've ice raced it, beat on it daily, and shift almost half the time with no clutch. It is still going strong. I put brakes on it when they start to grind.

Running costs on this car have been negligible. Starting to get a teensy bit of rust around the rear quarters, but considering it's been washed exactly twice in it's 6 year history, and I live where the roads are so salty you can cure a ham in your driveway, that's not too shabby.

It gets used as a truck to haul all manner of things from rally car gearboxes to kitty cats when it's time to go to the vet.

I am also looking for a Protege5 for my girlfriend.

A friend of mine's wife (now ex) ran her P5 into a bunch of rocks at a beach and beat up the oilpan...screwed up the pickup and lunched the engine. We got a 626 engine from the yard and got it going again.

I don't honestly know how she did it, cuz I've jumped mine numerous times and landed on the oilpan (on dirt) and it keeps on chugging. I hit a jump on the motocross track a couple weeks ago and broke the exhaust manifold bolts, so I sound so ghetto right now, but I'll fix that when I get a round tuit.

People where I work just say "nice Jeep." It lives with steelies and used hakkas. I have a stack of original alloy wheels in the barn, but I never mount them.

I went and drove one yesterday and I loved it. The guy who is selling it will hopefully be calling me today (his other car went into the shop after he posted on CL, if the other car is okay, then he'll still sell the 5)

It's not in perfect condition, but as my friend pointed out "that's probably best for you, after all, what will you be doing with it? rallyx, autox, taking it up on logging roads, etc." and the price is right, most are going around here for 8-10k, this one is listed at kbb at 5,900. The seat goes back far enough, there's room for a helmet, it's not blue or yellow or an auto. So, it's perfect.

And hey, wait a minute? What girlfriend, I thought I was gonna get to be your girlfriend!

Purchased a silver 03 Protege5 last night, $6700 with 69,000 miles on it and in beautiful condition. Had to drive all the way into BFE (Carlton, OR) to get it, but it was worth it. And, the people who sold it to me were awesome, the wife was a riot.

It was really hard leaving it at my friend's place while my knee continues to heal, hopefully it'll only be a few more weeks and I should be ready to start driving it.
