Data transfer?
November 20, 2008 12:51PM
I know there are smart computer guys here. Maybe someone can help?
How do I transfer safest 6-8 gig of data between two computers in two continents?
Can I use "USB Stick"? Or is "external hard drive" via self powered USB connection a better choise? Reason for self powered is different voltage.
Thanks.
PS. I know how to google but...

The human cell contains 75 MB of genetic information
A sperm 37.5 MB.
In a milliliter, we have 100 million sperms.
On average, one ejaculation releases 2.25 ml in 5 seconds.
Using basic math we can compute the bandwidth of the human male penis as: (37.5MB x 100M x 2.25)/5 = (37,500,000 bytes/sperm x 100,000,000 sperm/ml x 2.25 ml) / 5 seconds = 1,687,500,000,000,000 bytes/sec = 1,687.5 TerraBytes/sec

Are we talking transfer on physical media (the USB stick you mentioned)

Or electronic? How secure do you need to be?

Care to set one up as a FTP server?

You could...

- USB stick or External hard drive (some are self powered)
- Transfer the data via network. (Crossover cable could be handy here.)
- Burn to a few DVD-R's.
- FTP like Jason mentioned to work around the lack of a local network.
- Connect the Hard Drive directly to the other computer.
- Use a gigantic stack of Floppy disks.

It all depends on what you define as safe. Do you want something to just make sure the data gets there without being corrupted or are you trying to protect someone else from getting access to it during the transfer?

If it is the later you have to decide what you trust more: mail carriers or mathematics. If you trust math more then you could use a secure network connection + encryption like using PGP over SFTP between the two machines. Or some combination of the two. Like PGP the data and then post it on website or use regular e-mail. Or just use a secure connection and no encryption.

If you trust the mail then any of the USB based storage devices are fine. The Flash based ones are more durable, since they have not moving parts, than the hard drive based ones but you will typically get much faster write speeds out of a harddisk based unit. Electrically a self powered is not a big deal since the black box you are plugging into the wall is converting the power to a low DC voltage, like 12-16V. Look at the fine print on the box and it will tell you what input voltages it accepts most of them will work on 100-240V AC, so european power works with just a plug end adaptor no need for a fancy voltage converter since it is already doing that.

Guardian Edge Encryption software is what we use at work to transfer data securely. I assume it must be good software since the VA is all crazy about data security these days.

If I'm sending something intercontintental, I would NOT send anything electronic and expect it to arrive unmolested. What I'd do, is use a couple of DVD's, AND a USB stick, if you've got one that will fit. They can both be encrypted also.

Or, if there is a reliable internet connection on both sides, just transfer the files between them using an ftp program.
