As all uncivilized men know:
August 18, 1227 marks the death of my great Mongol ancestor, GENGHIS KAHN. This date was dutifully recorded and passed on to us by his Chinese chroniclers. So, today is a day of great and cherished rememberance. In his honor uncle Subotai may yet rise again and bring the empire to heal! In the meantime, here's a link to the Mongol Adventure Rally. Cars have a 1.0L limit; and Bikes have a .125L limit. What a hoot! http://www.mongolrally.com/ EDIT (I've been reading more.): No joke. This is really a cool rally with a great event website. Just read the rules, the FAQ's, and see the photo's for a start. A great event for the Anarchisti in all of us. Totally on your own for about 10,000 miles with no outside support. Wow. Sounds a bit on the scary side if you ask me. What good is knowing Spanish over there?

That would be hot. I guess that would be cold too. It's only 4,000 miles each way. LOL Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |

Phoenix to Anchorage? Boring.
The basic idea is team's of 4 people. Each team gets two cars. Cars have to be bought from a non-relative/non-friend for a fair price of $100. Only $100 can be spent additionally prepping the car. Whoever gets to the southern tip of Chile first succeeds in the Challenge. Starts out of Denver or wherever you want to start. All just suggested. There aren't rules and there isn't a sanctioning body or anyone organizing it and there isn't a reward other than being able to say you did it. We're going to look into rally dates in Mexico, and Central/South America too and try to coincide with one or more events. If one car breaks unrepairably, you abandon it and pile into the other car. If that one breaks unrepairably, you either start hitchhiking or you try to figure out a way to get home. There are no guidelines for entering countries or what paperwork is required, no guides for route, nor any official final destination, etc. Grant Hughes |

In a $200 car? LMAO! Chile, alone, is nearly as long as the US is wide. I can see why you would include the "non-family/friend" clause. Otherwise, someone might have a family member sell them their Land Cruiser for $100 and have an advantage.
That's a scary proposition, Grant. You might have to spend the entire $100 maintenance budget on tires! Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |

It's a spirit event. How far can you get. There aren't rules or even organization and no one is responsible if you get your throat cut in La Paz. Who knows if we will even attempt it but it seems like it'd be an exciting way to see the America's. And when you get there you abandon the car and fly home with no regrets.

The idea started with scooters actually. I was saying that I wanted to upgrade my Honda Ruckus to a 80 or 90 cc engine so I could go 60-70 and try to travel on it to South America next summer. Then Mark and I just ran with it and devised an additional plan.

Is this risk what makes your idea so thrilling and mine (Alaska) so mediocre? At the same time, I figure you're looking at at least 7,000 miles, one way, to the southern tip of Chile. Sure, you could abandon the one-liter-beater* (nice ring to that, donchathink?) anywhere south of Nogales and never give it another thought, but 4,000 miles each way to Anchorage, given the right time of year, might make for an equally challenging endeavor - if only on account of the elements. Not trying to change your mind, man. I think your idea has Chuck Norris written all over it, but I think that, if I were going to take a month off work to pedal a beater as far as I could get it to go, I'd prefer to avoid impoverished countries with a reputation for guerilla warfare, hostage-taking, and disease. Just a matter of personal preference, if you will. Like "Barf" said in Spaceballs, "We've got this thing about death. It's not us!" EDIT: You could call the event "The 1L Beater Eater." Hahah. Different cultures. Unknown road conditions/level of maintenance. Andes mountains. South American beaches. Mexico City. Peru. Adventure into the unknown.
There would definitely be a higher level of risk than a North American trip. But also a higher level of reward to me. Grant Hughes |

You'd be scared in my neighborhood then. Drive by shooting two blocks away. Stabbing half a block away. Playing Richard Burns Rally one night and hear some shit. Mark and I run out front (with Tank of course) and some guy's getting jumped on my sidewalk. The dog scared them off and they hopped back in the car and drove off. Crime rate is double the Denver average in my neighborhood. But the rent is cheap and no one complains about things like car parts sitting on the front porch and such.

At the same time, what if some rallyistas took an old school bus, dropped in a super powerful engine, beefed up the trans, installed the mother of all rally suspension setups, and then armorplated the biatch for a hell's bells rampage of South America. It could be called "The Magic School Bus." Oh, it would be so cool, with it's light pods up front... Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |
