Washington people- Whats there to do besides see that needle?
April 22, 2012 04:41PM
My lady is going for some buisness related dealie, And I decided to go with her. This means im going to have 2 or so days in/around Seattle with a rented car. I have to be in Seattle to pick her up around 5 or so, so big trips are out.

Any suggestions from all youse left coast-ers?

There has to be some entertaining unsealed surfaces that i can find out what my Kia or whatever it will be is made of...thumbs up

No, the streets downtown will let you find out what it's made, of, specially the ones south of the stadiums. You'll find out, part by part, as they fall off. EMP/science center are worth some time, ballard locks are too, and Dirtfish ain't all that far of a drive. Might be worth the trip just to drool on the cars they have in the showroom, like Burnsie's Sooby and such...

DEception pass bridge is pretty cool, if you want to drive about 2-2.5 hours north. Then come down whidbey island, there's a lot of cool stuff off the main route and a lot of little historic towns, fts, and parks. Then ferry from clinton to mukilteo and back down i5.

First there is no greater, more awesome place so no matter where you go you will love it! Even the rain is a tolerable exchange for all of the lush green. I fell in love with Seattle just as much as I did the man who led me here winking smiley

So here are my tips and suggestions. ..
1. The traffic here can be just as bad as Long Island and getting in and out of the city can be a bear…Pack your patience and come prepared to just roll with it.
2. If you plan to get a GPS (which I would encourage), beware! The street naming logic here is a bit more confusing than most cities (especially the numbered and directional streets like N,S,E, W) and it makes a huge difference how you enter the name in the GPS. Trust me on this!
3. A fun drive in the city to “catch some air”: Yesler St. Formerly Seattle’s Skid Row (in Pioneer Square neighborhood)used by the loggers to transport logs from the mountains down to the waterfront for shipping. The street has one of the steepest inclines in the city and if you start at the top and punch it, it’s a pretty fun ride (and a good way to scare the @#$! out of your girlfriend).
4. Something historic: Check out the Red Brick Road. Historic Seattle to Boston brick paved road built by the automotive industry as a means of promoting auto travel before highways were built. I posted a couple of pics in a different posting. The roads around it are pretty fun too.
5. Something beautiful: Depending on when you’re here check out Snoqualmie Falls. I was there today . It can be a bit touristy but if you focus on the nature you can feel the incredible force of it all. Just down the road is also a really cool Steelhead Trout hatchery with a bunch of 1 year olds ready for release soon (they’re an awesome fish). Some really scenic roads around all of this.

And a black tea with John is a given!

I was looking at Snoqualmie on googlemaps, Those roads down off the interchange, are they open to public? Look like they would be pretty cool cruse around on.

I dont intend to drive like a dweeb, I intend to enjoy myself safely. I belive it is possible to do so safely...

Pikes market is always fun. I can't remember the names of the little shops but there is an irish pub in that area that was a blast. Lox bagels and coffee for breakfast.

When I was stuck in Seattle for work with a rental car, I took a day trip up Mount Rainier. I didn't make it very far up, but did manage to find a neat little gravel loop that took me around the base. I was there in Sept., so this time of year it might not be an option.

Alki is a definite. Pike place is a must for great lil bakerys. Anthonys in Des Moines is a good place to have a dinner. Specially if its gonna be nice. Wife and I take the ferry to/from Bainbridge every now and then just to ride it. Have to see the troll. Snoqualmie Falls has a nice walk down to the lower portion. If you want a nice drive. Take 167 to 410 then on up to Crystal Pass. Awesome drive. Theres also a back way to Evans Creek off 410.

If you go to Pike Place Market (which you should), find the Johnson Berry Farm booth and try some of their jams. The Tayberry was one I found super surprising and delicious.

The ones I’ve stumbled on are all open. There are a bunch of private property roads but they are generally well-marked. You can usually find a local ranger or police officer who are happy to talk your ear off and share all of cool places (at least they do with me) smiling smiley BTW the lower observation area at the falls has been under construction for a couple of years as part of the project to rebuild the power plant.
