The lumber yard here in town is closing down, it has been there since 1895, and was one of those businesses where you always could count on high quality material, in this case especially redwood, being available, and the crew was like a family.

The beautiful piece of land with large shade trees and a creek running though it was where many great workdays started for me, and it always felt good buying from a family where I know the kids and the grandfather. The place will most likely be razed and cheesey overpriced condos will go in. It was just about the last useful business to fall here in a town that has been taken over by uptight lawyers, finacial industry pricks, rediculously bitchy trophy wives and literally dozens of hair salons

"progress" can kiss my big fat ass.

Yep, we lost our mill here too, one of the last of the original mills in the state. No doubt to be replaced with tacky crap.

Your ass ain't that big, or fat.

Yeah it must be rough to see your home overwhelmed and conquered by barbarian materialists. They're spreading like rats.

I just did some crown molding and chair rail from a local family mill, Stark Lumber. I've told quite a few people in Home Depot that I see buying that weird composite base board and such that you can get real wood stuff down there.
There is not enough production of real goods in the US anymore...

it's unfortunate, but you should do your part and go there with cash and buy all the tools you can carry/drag home. they might go to waste otherwise. Watched the mill in my grandfathers town close and re-open for years they finally closed it for good. bought a kalamazoo 610 band saw for $25.

We've had many big employers go TU around here. Sucks big time in a small town. Progress is often not.

As a former employee of a big box retailer (that one that's very orange and has pre-warped lumber), I try very hard now to buy products from local businesses and even better buy products that are produced locally or at least not by a multinational corporation. That said, I could do a lot better, I spend too much time and money in Harbor Freight, I didn't have time to get to the local jobber auto parts store and had to hit Rock Auto hard a couple times, and I'm pretty sure I've been in Walmart more than once this year already...*sigh*

The nice thing is that our local sawmills are actually doing more business lately! I try to buy local rough-sawn hemlock over the lumber yard 2x4s whenever I can (although I needed some PT stuff today...).
