Ultra marathon news.
July 17, 2012 06:20PM
The last few days there have been some amazing and inspirational results in the toughest of ultra marathons. Hal Koerner, 35, won the Hard Rock 100. The entire race is above 9000', and it features well over 30,000' of climbing. The toughest mountain race around. Today Mike Morton, 40, won the 135 mile Badwater race just 30 seconds shy of course record. He ran the first 41 flat miles (in 130 deg Death Valley hear) in just five hours. Mike suffered a devastating hip injury years ago (he's Army SOF), but he's on a comeback, and beating everyone. Who says you have to get old? My good friend Terry is on the Badwater course as we speak. He is 49, and two hours ahead of his time from last year (where he came in a stellar 15th). Poised to pass famous Dean Karnazes. Oh, and all four runners infront of me at the San Diego 100 were 40 or older.
Oh, and they're all vegans! Just kidding.
I'll be lining up at Ragnar this weekend, White River 50 next weekend, and Cascade Crest 100 in a little over a month. Will let everyone know how the suffering went (well, after the hundo anyway).

**Just saw Terry finished in 29:40. 10th place, and 2:30 less than it took him last year. Amazing... they guy was a pack a day, and cholesterol 250 when he was 35.

True JV.. running doesn't put food on plates. Perhaps it saves on medical bills years later, or maybe we'll all need new knees/hips/ankles. Hard to tell.

Nope, just tough old bastards who can run all day and all night in the mountains without stopping! Mike Morton is a green beret I believe.

Little late getting to this, but:

One of my regular co-drivers is Marie Boyd, who is the organizer of the Bishop High Sierra Ultramarathons (http://www.bhs50.com/). She's in her mid-60s and still regularly runs Ultras herself.

Quite amazing.

Very cool Michel! Thanks for adding that. I have a lot of respect for the older guys and gals that run in the mountains. You may not win anything at age 60, but just being able to run most of a 30 or 50 or 100 mile mountain race puts you way ahead of most 21yo's who can barely walk to their car!

Cascade Crest 100 in 12 days. I'm. Not. Ready!

Theres a really old footrace here in town called the Dipsea, super competitive, and often won by a 79 year old or a 13 year old!

Yea, dipsea is famous. Basically they give handicaps that even give advantage to the old and young. Then the fast guys have to HAMMER to even hope to finish close. Only race with that format that I know of. Sounds fun!

Its a really beautiful run over hill and dale, through the woods, up 700 stairs, past grandma's house, and ends at the beach. If you are ever inclined to do it you are welcome to camp out here.
