Going to Mars and beyond
April 23, 2013 07:35AM
The gutting of NASA over the years has always disturbed me.

I am disappointed I will probably not live to witness man on Mars, and manned travel to the moons of Jupiter.

I am truly greatful I was old enough (approximately 14) to witness and appreciate the first and later missions to the Moon.

We decided it was more important to bomb the shit outta Vietnam and then decided it was far more important to aid and abet Wall street in their economic gangbang.

The only way for any species to survive is to learn to colonize new planets. Period. Otherwise, extinction is inevitable.

I agree Jens, sad indeed, maybe even criminal. Space travel was the most spectacular and exciting change of our youth. It was the future becoming the present. Asimov, Burroughs,Wells, Nolan, Verne all great 'imaginators' whose wildest dreams came true...and then all got tossed in the shitter.

Prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

I always loved watching the launches. Watching the rovers on mars.

Man on Mars? We reached the moon 44 years ago and we don't yet have daily flights to visit the whaling museum we're supposed to have there.

If it wasn't for my eyesight, I'd probably be a perfect candidate for the one-way mission tentatively planned for 2022. Can't get new prescriptions on Mars.

I'd love to go. Yeah, there's the whole "you'll never see anyone ever again" but I'D BE GOING TO ANOTHER PLANET. 500-odd years ago, people went on long voyages with no planned return and no guarantee that they'd even survive the trip, let alone once they got there.

Safety in the mundane, or go for Great Things?

Yeppers, kid is raised and can run the shop. House is paid for and savings account is happy. Wifey is young enuff to find a replacement. Strap a rocket to my ass and send me to Mars. There are a lot worse ways to see the end.

Aside from men on Mars...We have proof that when we fund large scientific discovery projects the returns for every tax dollar are significant. I couldn't list the technologies that affect our everyday lives came from the NASA program there are so many. The Human Genome Project is another example that has already and will continue to yield returns. I certainly hope that someone has all the talented scientists looking into why our sun seems out of whack (all polar reversals considered).

Seriously. There is a series of videos by the CANADIAN ISS caption on youtube of him just doing random requests in space. It's pretty cool. He talks about mundane things like eating and brushing teeth, and then does cooler stuff like wringing out a washcloth, or cleaning up liquid spills.

Can you toss in a link or two? I would like to see some of that.
I'm not too lazy to try, but I am very busy fighting anti-gun legislation.
