There are different kinds of ghetto.
Or get really rural. Our shop is cheap for what it is. Way off beaten path, hard to find, no signage. 9/10 people have to have us come find them to show them how to get to it.
Rule #1: Don't show off around your shop.
Rule #2: The fewer people that know what is inside the better.
Rule #3: The fewer people that know it exists the better.

It's like the old car stereo rule. The #1 way to prevent car stereo theft is to turn it off a mile or so away before you get home.

For years I worked on my car in a parking spot and kept all the stuff in the service van parked next to the parking spot, except a few high value tools I kept in the apartment storage or under my bed.

Vans are cheap mobile storage units.

Other than shell prep the stuff we do is really bolt on and off work, it can be done anywhere. I performed a lot of work in that parking spot...

In the long run reality always wins.

this is why I work in the city but live in the "ghetto", but instead of a 2 car garage, I have a 1 car garage and a small shop and a big fence so they neighbors don't get upset with my "collection" (or the roommate's)

I had an aquaintance who rented out an old small manufacturing building years ago. Building was like 100years old and didn't have much of anything for cooking or bathing stuff lol. He was resourceful and rigged up a shower in the utility closet, had a microwave, a hot plate and a gorge Forman, a small fridge and aaaaaaaaaaaall the space he would ever need for his toys. We used to be able to skate to different parts of the building lol. He didn't really have neighbors and all of his stuff was kept indoors. I think he paid like 600/month for some 10k sq feet? was actually a pretty neat step looking back. If you're a bachelor who doesn't mind showering in a janitors closet lol.

Bolt on/off. I mostly look at stuff and drink beer. Glorified storage unit.

Just picked this up yesterday for 60$ a month. I live in a town of 17K people. Took me about 2 weeks of asking around.

I need some of that. Idaho is a bit far, even for $60 a month, though.

Well that's even further, but it's a more tempting relocation destination.

Willamette Valley, Eastern Abyss, Coastal Wetlands, Southern Hippy Paradise, Southern Redneck Paradise?

And to answer the OP: I rent a house with a 2-car garage and parking for 6 in the driveway. The landlord is cool with me working on cars and I do work for him every once and a while. I split the rent with roommates, so I pay $300/month.
