Recommend a game console for me.
December 08, 2013 01:36PM
I'm unable to rally anymore, but am considering video game rallying for fun. About 10 years ago many people were on Special Stage talking about the wonders of video rallying.

Recently the new XBox and Play Station were introduced. I have seen some of the older versions for $100 or less. (I don't want to buy a new one).

One thing I would like is to NOT have to connect to internet to use.

Suggestions, and why? (not just rallying.... maybe flying too).

TIA

dude i run pc, ive played ps3 and the box and the physics of pc are best, i run i racing, richard burns rally and just purchased wrc4 (although i heard the wrc series is not realistic enough) all in with a used pc, new video card for 3 screens (radeon 9583) 3 screens all the same off craigs list and a logitech g25 wheel and shifter i'm in for 500 bucks.
good "seat" time and technique practice. misss the gs ans bumps of finding the speed but great realistic fun/practice regardless. x box has some compatible wheels that are crazy expensive and the cheaper ones really arent up to snuff. ps3 is the way to go if you do game system it. free interner connection to online races, competitive leagues and schooling. i havent played the forza franchise in sometime on xbox but its road racing not rally.
richqrd burns rally on pc is unreal. complete online mods fir every year spec and stage of wrc erc and rallycross. very realistic physics and a very serious cult following demanding top level rqlly accuracy. if you're computer savy this is def the way to go man.
sorry bout the run on sentence

+1 on PC and Richard Burns for PCs in particular.

I know it's gotten easier for consoles, but updating and patching PC-based games are still so much easier. (Can you say Oscuro's Oblivion Overlay?) One thing to watch out for is whether the game must have an active internet connection to be played. That can be annoying. Richard Burns Rally does not.

Had not heard of this overlay for oblivion... but I will be checking it out... does it work with the shimmering isles material?

Richard Burns might be too intense. I find myself holding my breath and not blinking a lot playing it.
Xbox had rallysport challenge and mcrae games. Current garbage like dirt is just that, garbage.

I don't know. But you must get Oscuro's and try it. Most of all, the game no longer scales to your level. Makes for some fun surprises.

Here's the rundown from me

PC is for people that want the ultimate gaming experience, and don't mind setting it up. If you buy pretty much any game on PC, be prepared to set things up. If you aren't a computer person, I can't recommend it. If computers aren't a problem for you, go ahead. Gaming rigs are usually $500-$1000 or whatever. Richard burns runs well on older hardware though.

PS3 and Xbox 360 are the old generation of consoles. It is expected that they will be relevent for at least another couple of years. Both will run you around $300. The difference is mainly that PS3 has a blu ray drive, and Xbox 360 does not.

Xbox One and Playstation 4 are the current generation. They came out this November. The upside to these consoles is they are new, and are going to be good for at least 6+ years. Downside is they don't have as many games for them as the older consoles do, since they are so new. No rally game is out for either Xbox one or playstation 4. Xbox one does have Forza 5 though. Expect around $450-500 for these

Believe it or not, but the latest iteration of Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3 actually has gravel and "rally" physics down pretty good since the update. I've been impressed. And I used to play RBR with all the mods religiously. GT4 was terrible, GT5 wasn't much better, but now that they have updated the physics engine, sliding, jumping, and braking feels much more in tune as to what it really feels like on stage. I just wish they had more gravel tracks!

Have you played Skyrim? Skyrim feels more like Morrowind, Oblivion added a lot of cool stuff, but everything else sort of sucked. Skyrim is ridiculous though.

I would vote PC or a playstation though. You can get wheel/pedal setups for both, and both have a good selection of driving games, some more realistic than others.

Race 07 is a lot of fun, imo

We have Skyrim on the PS3 and Oblivion/Oscuro on the PC. My son loves Skyrim. A bit too much, IMO, as one Saturday a few weeks ago he didn't invite his friends over for D&D because he wanted to play Skyrim. instead. Grrrrr.

edit: you really want surround sound for Skyrim

Ohhhhh? Hmmm.... my brother gave me his old surround sound setup... I have a 2.1 system I bought back when I worked at a computer store. Maybe I should hook it up.

Oscuro is good on Oblivion, though. Oblivion just seems like the weird cousin of the series haha. It's still fun though.

It's like a modern first-person shooter game, but in a D&D (swords and sorcery) world. I started playing these games because my kids were older getting older by only one year every twelve months and I was itching to play D&D again. If you have a good system, they can be very engrossing, to the point where my heart-rate changes with the music and I occasionally jump.

You really want surround sound with Skyrim. With the music relatively low and the background noise turned up, you can actually hear someone come up behind you or attack from the side. You really should only play in POV mode, never with the "camera" behind you. Same as good driving games.

Surround isn't good in Oblivion. It's Skyrim that took this up a notch. I just wish they'd made a Move version of Skyrim. Holding a control-pad can take you out of character.
