Climb to the Clouds is scheduled to air in October...

But I'm pretty sure the town of Covington, MI is going to save rally! Let's go!

Having to pay course worker would make it so rally would actually need saving.

I predict course workers will .. never be paid. though eventually i could see some usage of drones / robots reducing the amount of course workers needed. and it will probably raise the cost of rally.

at some point we won't be able to find enough volunteers. when that happens if drones/ robots are a viable option they will be explored.

ATC could be some sorta robot with actual humans at the STC .

I greatly prefer to see and interact with real humans, but if my choice was robots or no rally. robots it is!

As soon as one started paying course workers... the love goes away. I'll volunteer for rallies and crawl through muck doing it... you want to PAY me for that? Couldn't pay me enough.

you have made me curious how are you thinking that drones/robots could reduce the number of volunteers needed? I see how we could use some automation for controls but spectator areas/road closures, I am interested to hear ideas.

Armed drones obviously.

Spectator steps onto the stage. Shoot them.

Citizen please stop, this road is closed for a special event ..

I think that about sums it up...

But on a serious note. ATC's , STCs, FTCs, & maybe flying finishes, could all be tablets. (little bit of programming with say the bar code scanner, or QR Code API) your time card now has a bar code or QR code on it.

pull up to the ATC (but not into) wait for your minute, pull ahead and scan your time card. it will then visually show you , your ideal start time. pull up into the STC , scan, and now it shows you , your Actual start time. , 3, 2 1 rally, you race.

Think you are gonna cheat? well there is also license plate readers now as well.

95$ software :

easiest is to put an air hose over the road, but if you want to get really fancy use a range finder.
https://www.google.com/search?q=motion+sensor&oq=motion+sensor&aqs=chrome.0.0l6.1216j0j7&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#tbm=shop&q=range+finder&spd=9974366780707792995

as soon as you are with in X feet of the sensor it snaps your plate , checks to see who that is, and their correct arrival time, if they entered late / early . it applies a penalty.

all the technology to automate this , already exists. someone just needs to do the coding. also prices dropping would be nice.

some things will never be cost effective to automate. (Spectator controls, most likely road blocks )

though honestly you probably want a human at the STC to make sure the competitors have their belts and HANS on correctly, etc...
