Another consideration is a truck is an asset (generally not to be considered an investment). You can use it for XX amount of time and , in theory, sell it for something. You recoup nothing from rental receipts.

You could use them to start a fire! That's worth something!

you also have an additional insurance and tag cost as well. Which that amount of money over the year could be a pair of rally tires

Your rally tires must be way cheaper than my rally tires.

$148.00 per 6 months for my van. , $call it 350 for a year after smog ... Almost but not even 2 tires. sad smiley

but ya.. in theory i could resell my van for $2k plus as Gene stated it does other things.. . (like buying 10' pieces of pipe from home deopt, or carrying 12 tires )

love that video ... I wonder if Aleana @ 19 months can do that yet? i'll try when i get home tonight. lol

DD a pickup truck than can tow. You need a DD anyways. I spend an extra 4-500 a year on fuel DD'ing a truck than my old car. Trucks have 10x more use anyways for things other than rally.

Buy a used trailer, value is nearly static on used trailer. If you can foot the initial bill its basically free rent minus up keep because you can sell it for damn near what you paid for it. I think this is a better route than renting, but everyones situation is different. If you're wishy washy, and might quit rally after a year.... well why would you want to do that anyways.

You gotta tell me your secret....
Or maybe you don't drive much or your car is a total gas hog...

I'd love to DD a tow rig but everytime I plug in the #'s (25mpg 4 banger car vs 14mpg tow rig)
I get more like $1650 more in fuel costs per year...

I get about 18 mpg average in my F150. About 14mpg towing the rally car. Truck EPA ratings, 15 city, 21 highway. Which is pretty damn consistent with what my truck actually says.

My commute isn't that much, excluding rallys I probably put 10k miles a year one truck.

Edit: My truck is actually rated a little lower than that, but I drive it like a 80 year old lady.

So, essentially your recommendation is that everyone should switch jobs such that they have a very short commute? And this Will Save Rally?

How far is your commute to work???

I mean, in my mind, anything over 20miles/30kms of non-freeway speed is a long commute. Even at said 20miles each way, thats only about 10k miles per year, 15k kms per year... Which makes mpg almost completely irrelevant to the conversation.

Now, if you drive 35k miles/50k kms plus per year, then sure, it definitely starts to make the difference, but you are nowhere near the average commuter at that point.

I'm saying everyones situation is different. I save a bunch of money by not DD'ing my car of choice. I see plenty of people DD'ing STI's.... then saying they don't have money to rally.

steve have you seen me driving around lately?

i had my 2005 STI paid off before i bought a 2nd car that became my rally car, by the time that my budgeting took a turn for the worse (when i "decided" it was great idea for my GF to become my navigator) my STI had lot a Ton of value , and there's not a huge benefit selling it.

Kbb says my sti is worth 12.8 but kbb doesn't know i had air bag deployment ... but if i sold it for 12k. i would be debt free and about $1500-2500 away from having my car put back together and upgraded.. (and with out a daily driver)

not showing up to work is gonna keep me out of rally.

sure my van is "only" about $1,400 away from starting reliably , so i could sell the STI, and daily drive my van ...

Sadly that is actually appealing to me... sad smiley

I'm not sure how many rally folk actually end up exactly like me. where you start with a totally sustainable rally model for your own budget /lifestyle and "upgrade" yourself out of being able to participate.

Had i never asked Jeana (now my wife) to navigate , I would probably be debt free with a running rally car right now. She talked me into getting a trailer and a tow vehicle ($7500 ) and on quite a few occasions more or less demanded a much better hotel then what i was gonna get, and wanted to eat out at nicer places.

its all my fault cause i never told her how much debt i was incurring with the "upgraded" rally style . even things like just going to events got much more expensive... i went from 28 mpg driving the rally car on 87 octane to 13 mpg towing on diesel . so now basically i'm paying 246% the cost per mile that i used to.

gone are $30 koa camp sites, and hello $120 hampton suites or what ever.

But how many people are making my mistake?

and i have learned from mine.. lol some how i have to "man up" and tell my wife i'd love her to come along on the rally with me, but she's going to have zero say on accommodations. don't like the roach hotel, stay home.

=============================

On a more fun note, I let Aleana try richard burns rally sim @ 19 months... and the results were... not nearly as cool as that video... lol ...
she actually turned it a bit left when i said to. but she also turned it more left when i said to turn right, and got mad when i tried to correct it for her .. lol then after about 25 seconds of that she decided the dog was much more entertaining... (but didn't want to let go of the wheel) lol

I'll just keep trying every week or so , i wonder how long before she "gets" it ? the kid in that video looks like 2.5 - 3 maybe?

Camping rallies will save rally.
