I don't remember if that's not what *I* said.
It is a paraphrase of what you said. That happens sometimes when you agree with someone.

Of course, now that you've decreed how it isn't done, you have to follow up with how it is. I can't claim to have ever landed cash sponsorships for a rally car/team, so tell us, how large are the rally driver/team sponsorships you have contracted?
Six figures, but that's for a series not for individual teams. I've helped teams get low 5 or high 4 figure deals. In all of those cases there were costs associated with getting the sponsorships. In the case of the team, it meant having the car in car shows and at a company function or two.

Yes, but if a person goes in seeking sponsorship without an idea of how a standard ROI calculation works, how can they begin to actually provide ROI? It just becomes this nonsense word that somehow means something like "value".
'ROI' is much more of a nonsense word than 'value' is.
What is really important is figuring out how the prospective sponsor measures their return and make sure you deliver better than promised in that measure. The only way that happens is by talking to your prospects and asking what is important to them before you put the deals together.

Hey everyone, I'm selling this apple pie, buy it, it has excellent ROI! winking smiley
Not all pie is the same.
For example, take me as a potential Pie buyer.
If the hypothetical you offered me two of the best Pecan Pies ever made for the same cost as one mediocre apple pie, I wouldn't accept and I'd probably ask them to take their pies and leave. Truth is I'd spend money for a mediocre apple pie before taking a free piece of the best pecan pie ever made.
But, I'm deathly allergic to nuts. I'd probably have bought an apple pie from you after some discussion about what was in it. (hint, if you don't know if there are or aren't nuts in the pie answer I'm not buying. If you lie and say there isn't when there really is, I'll find out the hard way.)

That's the long way of saying there is no standard measure of ROI in the real world and what is measured will change from project to project. Success comes from having the discussion with the sponsor about what they want and how they measure success of the program.

That's really old school thinking, particularly on a project by project basis.
Yes, marketing and exposure efforts have to bring in sales (of product or services) but that doesn't always mean a direct connection to the spend.
It could be that the ROI is measured by getting more 'exposure' for the dollar vs. buying ad time/space.

A lot of advertising is more about brand awareness than it is about directly pushing sales.

A lot of sponsorship is more about 'feel good' relationships and the brand either being seen as supporting something or getting an association with a community or program.

Of course some sponsorship programs are that simple and could even be built around sales increase, but I doubt it would be a significant deal.

i agree with a lot of this

Call me simple but as a business owner, I'm not giving anyone money unless it's going to help my business.
Sponsorships are far from simple, and not knowing the business you're in it is hard for me to draw meaningful hypothetical comparisons.
But...
You've got a staff member who races at the local circle track and he's struggling to get the car out to the events. He comes to you and says 'can you help me with my entry fee or my fuel costs' and because he works hard for you and is a good employee you say 'sure, if you put the company name on the car.'
You cut the cheque, put it in the accounts as promotional spend, so it comes off your books before tax and the $500 sponsorship is really only $300 (or whatever you'd get after taxes.)

Or...
You are a distributor for a product and one of the retailers you sell to comes to you looking for sponsorship. You know that he races in the woods with no series exposure and the spectators aren't they type of people who would buy your product.
But, you pay his entry fees for the season - about 20% of what you net from him - if he hosts a day at his store where he shows off the car re branded with your logo prominently on it and features your products on display. Truth is, you probably don't even care if the car has your logo on it at events.

If 'Some Guy' walked through the door and offered either deal you'd probably tell him to take a hike.

Jeremy, you should play with the tool. I'm not going to spoon feed you! LEARN how to have the data to make your arguments.

NRS is insignificant (read: not even a blip) compared to RA searches: "Not enough search volume to show graphs"
Thank heavens you didn't say he should play with his tool!

Too me this sounds like "true business" doesn't make much sense with these sponsorships. If any other advertising method showed up, if it had real return, one would use it. If spending on google adwords worked for your company... you would use it, regardless of who the sales rep was.

Kinda.
The point of what I was saying was much more that most rally sponsor deals wouldn't fly on their own merit and rely on a personal connection to get them together. The bigger the deal, the more legit it needs to be but even the biggest deals come together with some 'history' and good will.

Hyundai is showing us the way to save rally.

http://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/news/january-2014/hyundai-service-area-in-monte/page/935--12-12-.html

Hospitality / Service bays / Hot soup and drinks for all of the fans.

Only down side is that it takes 7 days to assemble at every rally, which may make remote service hard.

While I agree that rally is a tough sell to sponsors as the ROI isn't really there. I wanted to share this definition of ROI for future discussions. ROI is about more than money for some potential sponsors.

From Wikipedia.

Return on investment (ROI) is the concept of an investment of some resource yielding a benefit to the investor. A high ROI means the investment gains compare favorably to investment cost. As a performance measure, ROI is used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments.[1] In purely economic terms, it is one way of considering profits in relation to capital invested.

And DNFs on SS1 of their first WRC event this morning.
But hey, no problem. ROI is whatever you want to call it.
