Re: Tow championship

What are people's thoughts of the NRS National 'shootout' style championship?

Ehh... to be honest I dont think it excites anyone other than the people winning, or really pumping their tires claiming they won the national championship.

To me if you say you win a national championship you better damn be the best or at least close to the best in the country actively racing. Just my opinion. I know i'll be seeing 'quest for our national championship' posts leading up to BRS on facebook... while i shake my head at the shameless self promotion.

How would you personally measure that?

I would measure it by RA speedfactors seeing they have the fastest cars Block,Higgins and every other car falls under that.

First rally 2013
Rally car type AWD subaru
Total rallies as driver 6
Total rally cars built 2
Total rally cars caged 3
Total rally cars repaired from offs 4
Total years racing exp other then rally 19 yrs

So a championship is simple then? Just give it to the person that has the highest speed factor. winking smiley

Given the way speedfactors work, you could show up, beat Block once, get a higher speedfactor than him, and win that championship. Technically, given the actual formulas of the RA speedfactors, he wouldn't even have to be there, you would just have to go faster than he would have gone. So you wouldn't even need to actually race him.

So what you're describing is a you just have to be the fastest guy, at SOME rally, doesn't matter which, sometime during the year.

Championships are tough to define. The NRS is a very simple towing championship, two events and done. RA is a more complicated towing championship. Our country is so big it makes it tough for our sport. The 'shootout' is pretty much the same concept as the Olympics, fastest guy that showed up that day. Definitely a long standing way to determine a champion. NRS loses in the lack of exposure and the more limited area of coverage. RA loses in the cost to run it.

The regional war (either brand) is much more interesting I'd guess. Racing against friends is where its at.

the tow to Prescott last year would have been 20 hours (round trip) longer than towing to all the other NASA east coast events combined (round trip) (Magnum Opus excluded)

More people need to rally for the fun/enjoyment of it. Regardless of the competition. Sure competition makes you want to go faster but how many can really afford to concern themselves with being the champion? Just have a ball but don't ball it up trying to win it all.

Sure, it's a long tow. But what's unique is that all people who qualify have a (roughly) equal chance of winning the championship. And n is larger than in most other cumulative points-style championships. I would think that it would be more exciting, for the competitors... rather than being an has-run in a championship at the final event.

But just my thoughts.

Most people do. Bottom half of the field at any rally event is just "rallying" through the woods going recce speeds.

It's called rally RACING for a reason.

So what? If they're paying their entry fees and keeping the sport alive and enjoying themselves. So what? Maybe they can't or don't want to take a chance of balling the car up so they can spend that money to come back to another event and enjoy themselves some more. BTDT.

I doubt the Anders data machine has the ability to answer this question, but I wonder what the tenure of the competitors looks like associated to starting (or finishing) position.

My guess is (generally) that the top 10 make up the most entries-by-competitior' and the bottom 50-60% are those that fall into the 1 or 2 events and out group.

as a concept the "shoot out" is a great idea but without participation the winner will be from the side of the country the event is held on. With the extra time, effort, cost to cross the country what is the advantage of running the national event vs. adding an additional event in your area? There is only 1 NASA driver that has competed in all the ARC Rallies (2 dropping hyperfest, 5 w/o Magnum, 8 SB and ESPR only).
