Default RE: Competitors - Do You Require an SCCA sanction?

Matt,

There are very clear rules which allow the SCCA to sanction events without SCCA insurance... and these rules DO NOT include additional fees to the SCCA to "compensate" them for the loss of insurance "revenue"... so its something any organizer can do at any time.

As a fellow competitor I think all of us should be aware of just what the SCCA's policy covers for us and our crew. Then, if you are going to an event with different insurance, ask what coverage is extended to you and your crew... both in terms of medical and liability.

I'm not saying alternative policies will be better or worse (I'm sure they'll be cheaper)... but I suggest one should know one's risk.

I also have a very clear memory of a phone conference with Ralph Kosmides - ostensibly to talk to him openly about NRS coverage back then and the possibility of him competing in an event - which of course, went immediately to the PRB and where the continued sniping coming out of the members and the Red White and Blue SCCA underwear types was the difference in the medical coverage, because that was all that they could point out as being inferior to the SCCA's coverage.

But of course, that is before the SCCA punted, and the RA cabal took over.

Funny how things change.

What's Doug H. up to these days? When was the last time he drove a car in anger?

Only someone with something to hide would consider that a shot.

It's kinda like when people ask me about dealing with any given supplier I'll tell them they should find a selection of people using that supplier and ask those people what they think. It may have well escalated from there, but all JB is saying there is 'be informed.'

And that is all that NRS is doing, saying "be informed".

Being informed is good, especially when using an unknown vendor or blindly trusting an organizer. Beyond that the RA vs NRS thing is a waste of time.

I'd guess that most of the organizing level people know that event insurance with medical coverage and volunteer coverage and, and, and, costs a fair amount. RA did plenty of shopping trying to lower event costs. I just doubt there is similar coverage for a significant lesser amount. I could be wrong, it has happened. If an organizer is going 'independent' then they should be able to disclose who is insuring and what the actual coverage is well before the event happens. Then people can actually be informed..somewhat, most policies are written in legaleeze which is anything but easy.

That RS bit (I read it online, more or less) is so butt-turrible it had better be satire. The most dangerous firearms are the ones improperly secured, improperly handled, and/or used in the commission of a crime.
