my first love is rally
but i can only spend so much, so i build a rally car to run once or twice a year or build a roadracer and race 4-6 times a year?

Build it right and use the same car 6-8 times are year just changing ride height, and maybe final drive.. many cars are good on gravel and tarmac.
Ya heard of drop outs?

Or you build one that can do both!
Chumpcar and Rally Idaho in attached pictures.

I'll see your two events and raise you some more (ice driffin, rally, hillclimb, and tarmac hillclimb).

HFHV'ing on a budget will save rally, take that Ken Block....though I too can't seem to run an entire series. LOL

Full Disclosure: She did not say yes to me, a friend used the car at Pikes Peak and I was running the Evo.

The white car is Jari's old red car with a wrap on it.

You could use that car at the WRL endurance track event in September also!

Probably more likely to use Allison's car for WRL since it...you know...runs and stuff. Turns out $700 junkyard motors won't save rally.

Affordability will save Lemons/Chump/AER/WRL whatever other ones are out there.

I like gravel, I like the idea of a car with plates pulling up to a control, getting counted down and tearing down a stage.

I don't like not shifting out of second gear in some game of dodge-a-cone. I don't like spending a 12-hour day for what amounts to 5-7 minutes of competitive seat time.

I like the best ratio of dollars spent to time going flat-out, because that's how I drive, flat-out. The reality is I'm not a good driver, let alone a great one.

For $5,000 you can build a Lemon/Chumpcar that won't suck (less if you can DIY a cage and have lots of parts at my favorite vendor -- InStock). If you're smart, you'll split that four ways…I split it two and have two team members who basically arrive and drive for entry and gas plus they contribute a tow vehicle/trailer and find vendors crazy enough to trade names on the car for cash.

Once the car is built, it is possible to do a (local) race weekend for $2,000 split four ways…and with that you can get 3+ hours track time per driver if your car holds together. Is Lemons hyper-competitive? No, the object is to avoid trouble and have fun.

Travel is the killer. If you're sucking down multiple tanks of gas in an 8 mpg van to get to an event, and want to sleep in this thing called a bed that is placed inside these things called motels…well it can become $3,000-4,000 really fast.

And with the lightning strike just down the road, hitting send will save this message, and shutting off my computer may save a homeowner's insurance claim.

Looks like one of those Flying Squirrel suits in the trunk at a hill climb would do the trick. Drive up, fly down. When's NASA Rally going to OK the smart car chassis as a legal cage? Very small, slow cars will save rally!

Things I see that I'm 99.9% sure aren't legal:
* Dash Bar
* A-Pillar supports aren't straight when viewed from the side

Things I see that I don't like and might not be legal:
* Door bars too high
* plate gussets?
* no continuous diagonal in main hoop
* Seat mounts 4" off the floor (and connected to the sill bar)

How'd I do, Gene?

Shouldn't most cages be built out of 1.75x0.095 tubing instead? That's what the road racer types like, so for crossover cars. And if the weight of the car was 26xx and the weight cutoff is at 2650, does an econobox such as a focus actually shed more weight than the roll cage adds? Didn't see anything factored in in terms of a 70# tire and spares kit.

  • Front door bars can't be more than 50% of the total door height.
  • While not illegal, main hoop and passenger room would probably benefit from being laid back a few degrees.
  • The car already has a dash bar...under the dash.
  • A-pillar fitment is dreadful (when you're looking at the gap from the rear)

Dudes face in that screen grab says it all "eeeeh." Can't wait to see episode 2 where he re-does the cage. Wonder if they actually waited on welding the cage, or if that was for the general public.
