We can only maintain organizational costs to a certain level, beyond that we should look to low or no cost things to add value for the competitor or future competitor.

Agreed and the same can be applied to volunteers. Gene I would almost think you were eavesdropping on Anders and I this past weekend.

The topic was "do we deserve to rally for the price we pay?"

My estimates are that the rally entry prices we pay only reflect about 20% of a true business reckoning of what the input is. As in, if the people involved from bottom to top were compensated.

Agreed. While many volunteers can claim an entertainment value for their efforts, organizers rarely can. We do it for various reasons, giving back, socializing, pride in work , sense of duty, masochism etc.

Dear LSPR drivers and co-drivers,

Several of us have been exploring ways to improve safety and communication at Rally America events. One system that has been used with success worldwide is RallySafe. I have attached a few links with information about RallySafe.

We have been working with both RallySafe and the LSPR organizers to coordinate a limited test of RallySafe at LSPR. The one-time cost for this test is being shouldered by the teams that will be evaluating the system. There will be no cost to Rally America or the LSPR organizers other than their cooperation. The cost will include travel from Australia for 2 RallySafe engineers as well a fee for each box being rented.

While the per-car cost for this evaluation will be quite high (perhaps $700 per car if we only get 10 to sign up), the estimated cost for an entire series will be much lower as there would be NO travel costs for future events.

This evaluation is being done with the full knowledge of Rally America, but is not official timing or event safety. In other words; all the usual safety and timing measures will be in place like any other rally.

RallySafe may only have a limited number of their boxes available, so inclusion is on a first come / first PAID basis. We don't take credit cards; only cash and checks. Please contact us if you're interested at jb@robertsmgmtgroup.com.

Sincerely,

J.B. Niday (for Nick Roberts)

Many events list different entry fees: One with event/series advertising and one without.

It is an interesting idea... if you did that in our Western Canadian Regional events - and counted what it would cost to do the event without volunteers - you'd end up with entry fees about double what they are now. Nationals would be closer to 2,000 higher per car.

Maybe Transparency will save rally?

Having to pay workers would really change things. Federally, workers of seasonal amusement business' are exempt from minimum wage and overtime. Not a clue about state laws. Entry fees would really go up. Ralliests would then have to actually have to seek out sponsors and that would require a lot of people upping their game or dropping out. Without a large spectator attendance and charging fees rally would have a tough go of it.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting the sport won't continue to rely on volunteers to make it happen, I'm only wondering what the reaction would be to showing what it would cost to run the sport without volunteers or event/series sponsors.
