Make fun of the shunning all you want but I crossed in the middle of the block in Berlin and I could see three old ladies giving me the evil eye. Lots of light flashing when I passed on the right. There were a few other things but those two were not without notice by the locals and they let me know it.
Sure, some people don't care but they'll finally get the idea and leave. OL as I imagined it was based on, if it doesn't break, leave it alone. If it breaks, and there's an afforable item that won't - do it. Not too sure what "better ratios" falls into. I was contimplating a 6-speed and big rear diff and axles (STi) to: a.) not lose 2nd gear again and b.) be able to run 2wd. The extra weight was a consideration but the cost was high too and I had three boxes under the bench so I never did it. It took ten years to get a class and more rules mean more headaches for the tech crew and they want to drink beer as much as you do. I don't really care, it's your class now. |

Yeah i know. I gotta take what I can get. Kramer was off making babies, and Pritchard's car refuses to work. Just saying, the GD's can be competitive... provided the driver is. You can switch me and kramer's cars and he'd still kick my ass no matter which car he was driving. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/08/2014 02:36PM by czwalga. |

You know I'm just messing with you. I was happy to see you at the top since we weren't there. Pritchard is a good example of if it ain't broke don't fix it. Why no NEFR? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/08/2014 02:37PM by Jard. |

Well, my dad has a golf tournament that weekend. He would have skipped it if we decided to go, but i'm getting married in 1.5 months so saving some money wouldnt be a bad thing, and I had kellys stupid solstice project to finish up. Just a bunch of little reasons by themselves wouldnt keep me from going, but all added up it just didnt make sense.
I may do either Black River, or LSPR. Kramer was trying to get me to do NEFR any other year I probably would have. I'll be at sno*drift again for sure. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/08/2014 02:42PM by czwalga. |

I think of Pritchard and think how fast he would be if he had the same power as an SP car only 300#s lighter. As to the weight myth my 08 gr fully caged no CF braid rally wheels rally tires full of gas with tools and spares wieghs in at 3130 lbs. It will be lighter this go around with a cf hood instead of the metal hood.
Yes rally has fast cars and fast drivers and all in between. The thing is when 1 or 2 fast drivers have fast cars its really evident the car means as much as a driver. Whats there to police in the ol class that they dont all ready do. Fuel test and wieght pretty simple. I have a 2012 forester with a 225 hp rated stock 2.5. I can port the heads throw on thinner head gaskets up the compression go to race gas and tune for peak power and gang 40hp. for a total of what maybe 2k. Thats still cheap for a rally engine. Im telling you I build cars and there will be more then 150 hp coming to OL. How does your turbo Forester have anything to do with OL? There are guys building 200 whp NA 2.5 Subie motors, but it's questionable if they would last an entire rally. Take any of the EJ251 SOHC motors, do some head work, cams, exhaust, and ECU and you can get close to stock bugeye WRX power (165'ish whp). It's been done and it works. |

When the racing gets good, the racers spend money... happens all the time.
The only really effective way I've seen to limit spending has been 'claimer' series where any car can be bought at any time for a pre-defined price. For stage rally that would probably be ~6K?? 6?? There's GC shells with just metal work for sale for more than 6k. I hate that rule because I wouldnt sell my car save for some absurd offer. Takes a long time to build a new one; this isn't junk yard beater racing. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/08/2014 07:28PM by czwalga. |

Claimer doesnt work either. My oval track car of choice is the modifieds. No engine rule super light. You can make 800hp or 400hp. You can throw a blanket over the hole field most nights. The catch is max 2 tires per event and a hard skinny tire.

And that's why you probably don't see a ton of money being spent in OL. Like someone else mentioned. It's a regional class. Sure the plaque is nice, but is it $4k engine nice? Nope. The second that it becomes a national class you'll see a few people give it a shot in what they have now, and then in a year or two it'll be all out. Plus the gap between the winners-midpack-wayback has widened a bit in OL compared to a few years ago. Doesn't seem like the racing is THAT close at the top to warrant spending a ton in upgrades. The Legacy even though is technically open class, still is a bone stock 2.2T with a VF11 putting down a monster 160hp stock (maybe 180 with the intake/exhaust?). Basically a hot-ish open light car, and it still did well at STPR. Gearbox is really what will make the difference in an OL car, not power. The legacy has Cusco 1.5 way diffs front and rear in a 4.44 box, and just night and day difference compared to my old legacy with a stock RS driveline and 130-140 hp. Despite same suspension and steering quickener. The extra 30-40hp while noticeable, isn't what is making the difference, those diffs are. Side note, sort of related to national vs regional class. I honestly cannot remember, but what was 2WD like 4-5 years ago? When it was greenhouse and... who else? Now that you have ford/scion battling it out, I cannot rememeber how tight 2WD used to be nationally. Were people spending as much as they are now? Or was it more of like OL is today, bunch of privateer guys who can pedal a car decently without blowing a ton of money? |
