Robert, it’s true that the 2.5(and the 2.3 which is identical height)is taller than 2.0 and hood clearance could be an issue.

If you click on the merkurforum links I posted above you can see the discussion pertaining to this.

So the Miata trans is a no go?

T5 bad but still doable?

I wonder how bad the ranger truck(I know-truck transmission-groan!)gearbox would be as far as shifter locations and ratios?

With regard to the trans/shifter:

It's not a no-go, but it probably require cutting the shifter hole an inch forward or more. Then you'll need to fabri-coble a set-back shift lever. I used a piece of 3/8" aluminum flat bar, that just moved the shift knob back ~3in. The flat bar would thread onto the shift lever, and a jam nut on top/bottom kept it from spinning loose. Worked well, and felt normal.

The Ford t5 worked a lot better with regard to torque capacity, and the shifter is further back. But then you have to spend money on an adapter bell housing and custom clutch disk. So that's about a $1k usd just to bolt the T5 to the MZR. I wish Quad4 was still making bell housings, they were a bit cheaper ($400?) and worked really well.

I wonder if a DuraMZR 2.5 NA could easily be dropped into the ExRat Lemon. We bounced around the idea of the NA 2.3 Lima with a big ass carb, but then when I realized what the race gas would cost to run a Lemons race would cost...plan B...drop a slightly more modern SLAAB Turbo with the DI shit in it. But I start thinking snails, and oil lines, and more 20+ year old leaky shit running hard for 14+ hours...

I dunno. I have enough beer to get a vision quest going tonight....

I'm not sure the 2.5 would clear the hood. The 2.5 is taller than the 2.0, and the 2.0 in Dave's rally car is pretty close to the hood. That's with using a custom oil pan and pickup to get it really close to the crossmember, and cutting the firewall to move the engine back a bit as well.

Also, the Miata trans shifter sticks up at the very front of the tunnel opening. T5 fit's much better, but still not great.

It's a Lemons car and my team has a plasma cutter. We already cut the firewall so that half a dozen bolts get you bell housing access from the inside (which we may need to neaten up, but they haven't called us on it yet).

Zero. Fucks. Given. in terms of pretty. Hood? Just has to have one.

Perfect, shouldn't take any time to swap in!

Check out retro-ford for a low-pro steel oil pan. Just make it look ugly and sneak it past the judges.
They also make a duratec to T9 bellhousing as well...

If you still have the T9 cores I might be interested. Just need the cases basically to fit CR gear sets.

Hah, yeah. I have a BUILT 2.95 T5 that I've yet to throw in my XR. T9 is fine but hard to find a short shift kit for it haha.

It wouldn’t happen to be Jeff LaBonte?

I actually went to high school with him.

76 cars at the last Olympus. Lots of new people. Doesn’t look like much saving is needed!

Phew. Guys, it's finally time: in just a couple days I'll be able to tell you how rally will be saved.

Grassroots rally. It's what I think about.
