Cheating only if you get caught!
October 10, 2012 12:24AM
So I have always enjoyed hearing the ingenious ways that teams have cheated the rules (or intention of the rules) over the years. If your not familiar with Smokey Yunick in NASCAR do yourself a favor and pop on over to google and sit back with a cold beverage.

Anyway. Rally is the name of the game here and its hard (for me at least) to find the goods on some of the things teams tried or are accused of trying over the years.

Here is a good WRC Cheating page I found.

Got some more?

Cheating is not cheating until you get protested and excluded from an event

Right now, someone somewhere is practicing. And when you face him, he will beat you.

The "what is cheating" is an interesting discussion, that's for sure. If I service in a control, and get a 10 minute penalty, is that "cheating" since I'm not supposed to do it, or is it playing by the rules since I did it knowing that it is allowed, but with a 10 minute penalty attached to that behavior?

What would Calvin say?
It's cheating if you thought about it.
But you were destined to cheat because your salvation was writ before you were born.

Or as some say "Enshala".

I don' think the "illegal service" is cheating since the penalty is not exclusion. Personally the loss of desire to finish at all cost is unfortunate.

Doing something specified ad illegal like using STI parts in a PGT WRX. Is disgusting. But interpretation is an interesting fine line.

from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cheating -

"to violate rules dishonestly"

sums it up pretty well, IMO.

Funny, you would think it would be to violate rules honestly.

No, that makes sense actually. Back to my original example, servicing in a control. You're breaking the rules, in full view of other competitors and officials. That's honest, as there are no secrets and no untruths.

Spare wheels/tires hidden on a transit.... exactly the opposite.

Or, servicing to a control, while your codriver distracts the marshals/close competitors with a nudie mag/tales of snowmobiles in the woods/etc.

Unless your codriver just does those things normally...

Interesting thought on time penalties and if actions that cause you to collect them are illegal / breaking the rules. The more I think about it, the more I flip back and forth. On one hand if you get assigned a time penalty you could be late (or early) for a control and this could be done on purpose (strategy). Yet you can get time penalties for doing things that you REALLY should not be doing such as speeding on Recce or "illegal service". Maybe its just semantics rolling around in my head. Good pondering topics for the drive out to BW tomorrow.

A good example of the "rule breaking" that I find intriguing is the fuel line debacle from the link I posted at the beginning of the thread. The rules stated that you could only have XX gallon fuel tank. Smokey's interpretation concluded that it was not stipulated how much fuel he could carry. Just that he could only use a tank up to XX capacity. Obviously the intention of the rule was to mandate the fuel carried in the car, but that's not how the rule was written.

So here is a moral/ethics question:
Are you following the rules intention? or the rules verbatim?

If you were to drill a hole in every connection of roll cage tubes, so the entire structure was now one big "tank..." and then sucked out the air to leave a vacuum, you would save .095 pounds.

What if you filled it with helium? Or hydrogen if you're more daring.

Which weighs less... a box with a vacuum, or a box with something in it...

Which *weights* less? An empty balloon versus a balloon full a helium...I'm betting on the helium.

Which has less mass?
