Rally Car:
Daihatsu Charade GTti DOHC Turbo, and Mazda MX-5(miata) Turbo(bent)

It was suggested that I introduce myself, and it seemed liek more fun than the rest of my plans for the afternoon.

Hi, I'm Andrew Buerckner
I'm a Gemini and I like long walks on the beach...... Hang on that's not right. smiling smiley

I'be been rallying since '04 started as a nav and service crew. I drive now and still regularly Nav/service offical etc I'm sure you know what it's like.
I've now got 2 rallycars, one 1600cc FWD Charade which I built myself with help from mates
see here for more details (I tried to attach a pic but i don't have any smaller than 256kb WTF?)
http://www.bmsc.com.au/forums/bmsc-members-rides/25597-charade-4-door-rally-car.html
essentially a light(ish) FWD car with a fairly mild 75kw ATW, LSD, quick powersteering and a very stiff chassis.

Trying to sell it as I also own this MX-5 Turbo.

really early video, and I've attached a pic of me over "The Mineshaft" in Canberra. It's a pretty famous bit of road and you really don't want to jump any higher than this, certainly a brown pants moment!

roughly 180RWKW 6 speed, full spool, very nice suspension and it's not you're average escort/datsun/subi etc. Top fun to drive

Last year(my first full season driving) I won State 2wd, State Clubman, State Novice driver.
This year I rolled it at about ~150KPH (just under 100mph) and made a mess of it.
Best part.... I didn't own it till after the first roll!eye rolling smiley

Anyhoo that's a bit about me.

Seems like it from the photo...

Now, the question is, since this guy is already a Volvo perv, how to get him into a "Group 4 Escort-ized" 240, and show OZ what can be done.

I've supplied to Oz the baddest assed Volvo Touring Car guy Dick Prince with pistons, rods and some Cossie turbine housing and he went from mid-pack to winning in their Vintage tour Car series, now we need to show Oz what a 240 can do on their fast roads...

Welcome.

Got any pictures of your Charade? I rallied with a fellow in Kenya that had one. He was blody fast in that thing!

There you go. these are the pics used for the logbook.

As for Rallying an MX-5 Yep no worries, our rules atate thet convertibles must be fitted with a hardtop other than that rules are the same as anything else. I've attached a pic with the roof off when it's in tarmac mode.

They drive really well once you get them up off the deck to get some ground clearance. Small, handle well and have heaps of aftermarket bits for them. There is some strengthening needed but we've figured out most of those, and I haven't DNF'd appart from crashes eye rolling smiley

As for Volvo Rallying, maybe Spac will let me pull his 240 out of the shed for a play some time, but for me I'll still with the sleeper 144 turbo road car.

Welcome! My first rally car was a 1970 Datsun 1600 roadster (maybe Fairlady over there). I certainly wouldn't have wanted to roll it at a 100mph....or even 50 in retrospect.

Don't worry neither did I! The cage did it's job and kept the roof off our heads, wasn't even stiff the next day.
The car's stuffed and will need a pretty serious rebuild. Luckily my friend, and previous owner, is the cage builder on the paperwork(we build it together) so we can repair/replace the cage without needing a whole new logbook etc.
Also got a spare shell in the shed too.... one does not go rallying without a spare shell now does one? smiling smiley

So this is what the car looks like now, gotta sell the charade so the wife will let me fix the MX-5

P.S the Fairlady would be a pretty cool first rallycar

We got the G100 Charade here in the States for a few years. The 3 cylinder power plant did not make it a huge seller.

Mines a big block 4 pot 1600.
A friend has a 3 cyl DOHC turbo one.... that's got heaps of balls and weights about 850kg.

they are shithouse road cars but great little rally machines

Well it was inherited from old SCCA days. With a cage there is---like so many of SCCA/RA rules----not logic or real world basis. That means it was some smoke-filled back room at the convention deal...and then the notmal "What you dare question US!!! We'll dig our heels in so hard the world will stop spinning! NOOOOOOBODY QUESTION US!"

I'm pretty sure every roof is technically removable, just depends upon tools at hand and the amount of time involved.

I would think that someone with the skill to patch a sunroof would be able to find a way to make a removable hardtop a bit more attached.

If your roof is removed to weld in cage and riveted back in is that legal in RA?
What about held in with bolts?
Are you REQUIRED to spot weld a roof skin back on?
