Dave hord ran one on his little rally bug and had issues with the accusump getting dirt and crap in it, scoring the walls. And he's just doing the Classic Car Adventure stuff. Not full blown rally. I think he's still using one but made sure it was in the cabin to protect it from dust.
First time I saw the Purple Panda it had what looked like a 3" LED brake light mounted in the center of the dash. "Whats that for?" "We just spent a ton of money on the motor, thats a low pressure oil light. Didn't want to miss it" I laughed pretty damn hard but it's a really good idea. |

Sounds to me like the turbo ate its bearings from overspinning because it had a boost leak, moreso than running with the recirc valve disconnected. As you pointed out, it sounded a lot different, yeah?
Same thing as when you run a recirc valve that leaks under high boost. You kill turbo. Simple solution for both of these problems... Pete Remner Cleveland, Ohio 1984 RX-7 (rallycross thing) 1978 Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver. |

I've got the modern version on my MX-5, Red/amber LED trailer light. Amber shift light The red is hooked up to 20psi oil pressure switch and a 5psi water pressure switch, If that comes on at anymore than idle or cruising around it's engine off time. |

To expand off Grant's suggestion of having the ignition kill on low oil pressure...
I have 2 loud buzzers wired on my low oil pressure light switch for my bug. I've had problems in the past with low/no oil pressure on stage. Things like where there are a series of medium speed turns. Like L3 into R3 into L2+ into R2 where the oil is sloshed up into the heads. Or times where after the car spins out in a turn and the oil gets scared and goes to hide in the heads. I don't think I'd want to have the engine turned off automatically when I get low oil pressure, but you definitely want to know as soon as possible when you have low/no oil pressure. Usually the oil pressure goes back up quickly after immediately going to idle. At least for me and Mark, large red lights don't always get noticed when you are concentrated in driving/codriving. |

You could maybe piggyback to that buzzer a cattle-prods..one each. Inserted into a select orifice--which should be obvious---so its out of the way, when that things gives you a little ZAP! you'll notice. I've been talking about either an oil pressure auto kill switch for me, or at least some sort of gauge. after reading this thread now I'm thinking maybe the super snazzy way is to have an auto kill switch at like 5psi, and then a low warning light that kicks in at some before the auto kill .. you could go completely crazy with gauges and warning lights . oil temp, oil pressure, light at X temp , light at Y pressure, coolant temp, coolant temp warning light , even coolant pressure warning ... How much makes sense say on a 4K motor ... ![]() |

I had an engine I made where I had a temperature switch and an oil pressure switch both hooked to the same circuit. Something goes wrong, light goes on. Might add one for coolant pressure too. But I figure, light goes on, you can check the gauges at your leisure to figure out which one went bad later, no reason to have to know which light went off right away.

That sounds like a good solution.
1 big warning light and a few things that can activate it. .... and having gauges for those things. i'm thinking of buying something like this : ![]() seems like i could either move the warning lights, or do some careful re-wiring and make it so those lights still turn on + a big warning light on my side. ![]() I won't be buying anything until about April / May |

I've have a very similar guage laying around for the past... well more then a year... or 2. But I've been putting them off just because I've yet to find a good repetitive lead on where to install the sensors on my NA 2.2 Subaru motor. Any one here have some suggestions?

*sarcasm* for the coolant temp you just poke a small hole in the top radiator hose and push it in there good and far. a little plumbers tape to hold it into place
and for the oil temp and pressure ...... ![]() /Sarcasm When you do find out, i'd love to know, for my 2.5 |
