Well the guys making their sarcastic comments obviously know the answer... The same guys had in rapid succession 4 headgasket failures in a normal ol Lima SOHC... I'm puzzled myself..Isn't Ford usig the same thing in Mustang EcoBoost 2,253 cc (137 cu in) I-4 314 PS (231 kW; 310 bhp) @ 5,500 rpm 434 N·m (320 lb·ft) @ 3,000 rpm 9.5:1 Ford warrantys the car 5 years.60,000 miles.. seems running a bone stock eco-boost ought to be good enough and have way more power than is needed in a 2wd car on gravel.. But what the fuck do I know. Should be easy for those experts on Facetoob. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! The Facetub thing got weird quick...
Needing to tear into the motors to see what's up. The first one was overheated so so so many times before it holed a piston. Second one may have broken ring lands or a hole in a piston, this one never overheated. First engine saw a lot of rev-limiter, second engine was a lot less... so more down low pulling. Some ideas that we've tossed around: -The current tune is a Ferd Racing Performance Parts tune with crazy stupid boost and torque down low, and this might just be too much with the constant abuse of rally (not sure). The ECU was throwing a few codes that were related to high intake air temps, so maybe the charge temps got too high. The current intercooler is a little smaller than stock due to packaging in the xratty (it sits on top of the radiator, not in front). If it get's bigger, the core needs be modified a bit, or it goes in front of the rad again. -Might be an issue with the ECU as it's lost power a few times, and a quick off-on of the power switch cures that (maybe it was going into a limp mode?) Trying to get in contact with FRPP and see if they can help out, and see if the tune can be changed if needed. Anyways, not super stoked on the engine failure. I'm open to all ideas at this point, so throw them out here. |

I'd prefer to just berate you for swapping to a modern engine instead of ye old boat anchor bobcat engine.
Rally is hard on engines usually. Any idea what the failure was yet? Heat and detonation are typical culprits with boost according to captain obvious. Hopefully it's something not too hard. The real question, how did Dave like his Dad's car? I enjoy my BMW so much more than I did the Merkur but it has also been easy, cheap, and reliable so far and is easier to drive near limit. Proper gravel wheels and soon will have our collaboration with DMS strut options done. Grant Hughes |

I went out and retrieved the car from the woods. It started easily and I drove it onto the trailer after adding 1/2 gallon of oil. There was raw exhaust pouring out of the crank case breather.
In service I removed the plugs. 2-4 looked OK. No. 1 was soaked with oil. Had a quick look under the valve cover and all was well. The question is burned or broken piston/rings? I really hope Robert can figure it out because it sucks to give your race seat away. And then get it back with a smashed oil pan! Robert. "You are way too normal to be on Rally Anarchy." For what it's worth, the 2.3 engine bits are not the same as the 2.0, different rods/block/everything. Supposedly dimensionally similar enough that cheap new 2.3 Ecoboost bits are a performance upgrade for the Mazdaspeed engines.

i'm interested to hear what the issue is, i have been thinking about an ecoboost in the second foxstang, but i may stick with the lima turbo coupe for power

Something just clicked in my brain here.
If the computer is setting a fault code for charge temps too high, one of two things could be happening. It could be accepting the data as valid (just out of normal bounds) and is working with it, which MAY involve pulling fuel since the air is going to be less dense... or it could be throwing it out and going with a fixed value, which may also be way insufficient fuel for conditions. Now, why would the value be high? Could be bad intercooler. Could be heat soak if you have the sensor threaded into a metal pipe instead of plastic/rubber like Ford intended. That would definitely throw off sensor values, it would be reading a lot higher than actual. Fuel is pump premium. PCV system is venting to atmosphere with a catch can, not venting into the intake at all.
There are two temp sensors mounted in aluminum tubes. One pre intercooler and one post. The pre intercooler sensors could be getting some heat from the turbo. The post intercooler one is in the opposite corner. Still something to look into! |

If the ford tune is that aggressive/close to the edge, it would be cheap insurance to run some torco or Lucas octane booster to make sure you didn't get a bad fill up and at least have 91 octane or potentially 94. It could give you that little extra buffer to keep you safer when the temps start to get way up there. It would cost less than $30 a rally which is probably cheaper than the engine swaps no?
Where is the color change on the spark plug ground straps? If the plugs are the right heat range, they don't look too lean, and the color change is taking the corner heading toward the base then timing is probably too aggressive. If not I would be looking more towards potential mechanical issues although it is a little late for a leak down test. haha This is without seeing the piston though. Don't even know what happened in there yet..... |

Again...so how many times did you blow the Lima and now is this 2nd or 3rd time?
