Ok so I've gotten stuck with the Volvo, I can't get a crank signal so it's been sitting for a while. Once I get an oscilloscope, I'll move back to it, since I will be able to read the waveforms n shit you know, but I'm tired of all this electrical nonsense I'm trying to go fast ricky bobby not re live my FIRST Robotics/ RC car days LMAO
So I've been working on my cavalier a little bit. The plans are to clean up the rust, and make it safe enough to get into another accident. The thing is, I got into a rear end accident a little while ago at like 10-20 mph and it did a lot of structural damage (or at least exposed the structural damage that was already there due to rust This car isn't really worth saving I know, but it was my first car, and I want some practice cutting and welding stuff before I start fabricating stuff for the Volvo. Plus, this one starts up...haha My plan is to cut out the areas that are too rusty and to make patch panels to go over them. And for the rear, the plan was to weld in new frame rail around where it crumpled by the bumper, and to make a custom bumper made out of tubing (Like a drift car bash bar) Does this sound like a good plan? |

Generally speaking it's a bad plan.
But that's kinda what this website is all about. It's a lot of effort in a shit car, won't add value to it, etc.. But if you haven't fab'd repairs on a rust heap before, you will learn some things. Like how bad an idea this is lol. If you can muster up the gumption, work on something not engine related in the Volvo and take a pic of the cavalier as it leaves for the scrap heap. You'll be happier in the end. However, I totally understand doing dumb things for emotional reasons. Also I value keeping moving. So if it's Volvo depression on the couch or cavalier learning opportunity, I vote cavalier. Hey I remember you. What the hell are you doing with that rust bucket? Roundy round? You’re going to actually race that cavalier? Where? What is the purpose of that car? Dude -this is kinda ironic coming from me, the guy who Still has a dead grass-o-cross car sitting in my driveway since 2014 (much less have a competing stage rally car),but forget that pile of rusty shit and get back to the Volvo. ................................................. ..................... I appreciate the advice, but the way I see it, of I'm gonna put a roll cage into the Volvo to go racing I'm gonna need to know how to fabricate automotive stuff and do basic bodywork and I'm terrible at both of those things. This might not end up becoming a race car, but it will definitely be a science experiment. I don't think the cutting and welding will change the vehicle's scrap value, correct?
Like I don't know a lot about unibody structures and how to repair them and I want to learn. Does anybody have any good books or articles on the subject??? I want to be able to bring cars back from the dead like Eric Ewert (Sorry if misspelled)did with his Volvo after he wrecked it. And I definitely can't do that right now, know what I mean???? If I just wanted a little bit of seat time, I'd just keep sim racing and indoor karting. Better bang for time spent as far as driving goes. I want to fully master the automobile or die trying. And a master could bring this car back from the dead, he just would need a good reason. |

Yo Yengi, you need to update your location.
It says Potsdam NY, but it looks like the dam has broken or global warming raised ocean levels to the point you now live in the sea for a car to be that corroded! Your car is suffering an existential crisis, namely that it only partially exists as the rest of its missing molecules appear to have fucked off backed to the periodic table of elements. It's a project for sure. You could embrace CAD (cardboard aided design) and cut up cereal packets to make templates for the repair sections. Only issue with that plan is you're going to eat so much fuckin cereal you'll then way a tonne and the car will need re-engineered further to cope with your increased weight... Dude, for what it's worth, I don't think you should bother with that Cavalier POS. If you want to learn to weld/cut/measure etc. just find some scrap metal and build something out of it. Also, if you fuck up something on the Volvo, you can just cut it out and make a new one. Just a thought. Ask for work. If they don't give you work, ask for bread. Yeah but why go out and get more scrap metal when I have a perfectly good chunk of scrap metal sitting in my parents garage? |

![]() We tried. He should realise soon enough that you can't weld rust. Or maybe he's just trollin'. Who knows. Ask for work. If they don't give you work, ask for bread.
