So far not too much. Paul, the owner of the car is saving his dough, selling a bunch of stuff he doesn't need to save for his suspension and roll cage, so we are in standby mode. He was given a donor car with a few bits that were better than what he had, so he's stripped the donor, sold everything he didn't want or need. We have the focus in the lift right now without a front suspension and sub frame so we haven't been able to get his car in the lift for suspension photos yet. I found a four cylinder motor that was the same year as his car and tried to convince him to get it for his car but he didn't bite. After seeing that new 320is you posted though convinced me. That engine sounds sweet.

I'm hoping I don't come off like a douchebag here but have you considered looking into the motor from the 318? Its a 1.9L four-cylinder and it already comes in the car so California won't mind the motor swap.

Yes, the 90-91 year models would work probably in CA. for an engine swap. Looked into it already so we'll see.

Wow.. this thread is fun.. I really think I read John stating that Communism is BETTER than CA.. I'd have to agree (thought I haven't really experienced communism, but I have experienced CA)...

A good friend of mine has a 87 325is. I really liked driving that when he got it. The trans actually wants to shift (unlike my common blue car).

Now my GF has a 92 318ic. The ic's came with a silly low gear ratio of something like 4.27. The little car is a blast to drive (even without the power of my common blue car's turbo). You can also find lsds in the ises, so getting a useful rear under the car is possible.

If the car needs a swap, that M42 isn't a bad little engine at all. Seems pretty easy to work on and parts aren't all that hard to reach.. Though if you don't want to take the intake apart you have to be a bit creative to change the starter.

Now, if one was building a rally car.. I'd probably wait on the swap until you've got everything else done. A proper referee'd CA swap might be enough to derail a rally car build from being finished.

Well, this is a pretty old thread. The BMW ended up getting wrecked before too much effort was put into it and the owner decided to part with it. I ended up building an offroad car for someone else in the meantime. Here are some pics..

Took longer than I had expected but ran into all sorts of issues..

OMG soooooo cool!!!!! I want to do a locost someday, but maybe do long travel suspension for hooning about.

This build was on a real tight budget. Started out as someone's huge (6.5' wide) 4 seat crawler project. I cut the front and rear end off the original chassis, dropped the floor 12" and added the front and rear ends to accomadate A-arm long travel and rear trailing arm suspension. It was also my first full suspension from design to completion. It was intimidating to build the front J-arm & rear trailing suspension arms from scratch but a little research on suspension design and the slot tab/box method and they worked out great. I did the rear trailing arms and links also. Front is around 22+" of useable travel but could go as high as 26" if you're willing to go into higher +camber, Rear is 32". 37" BFG Bajas, 2.5" Class 1 hubs. Ford 9" with 4.88. I only did the roller but it will end up being LS powered front engine, rear wheel drive. 144" wheel base, 8'6" in total width.
