I've been wanting to put a cooler on my EJ20 motor but I'm worrried about low oil pressure. The only upgraded oil pump is from Coswoth and is really pricey. I don't know how hot this motor will run in competition as it's only had a couple test days. I THINK it should have an oil cooler as it's 9:1 compression with 25-30psi of boost. Any suggestions?

Always a good idea to have one...A/C hose works to plump one (for me anyhow)...Lots of good OEM stuff out there.. Not cheap new..

Oil cooler install is the easy part. I'm just not sure if it's gonna cause dangerously low oil pressure. Those oil lines are generally HUGE like -10, -12 stuff. I guess I'll just have to install a pressure guage and see where I'm at. In an ideal world I'd get the $500+ Cosworth oil pump.

What about an aluminum heat sink deal on the oil filter?

Might help out some. Definitely won't cause low oil pressure.

In my quest for steering quickeners I came across power steering reservoirs with aluminum fins on them. I was thinking along the same lines in your case.

They do make electric oil pumps, but they're pricey $300 or more if I'm not mistaken.

Not a bad idea but the oil filter is like RIGHT beside the exhaust manifold. Atleast the motor uses a water/oil cooler where the filter screws on. I think I should just plumb in a temp guage for now and see where I'm at. Soonest possible event is Tall Pines atleast, where outside temps are guaranteed to be cold!

The Cosworth pump is nothing more than a warmed over stock pump....absolutely nothing you cannot do with a dremel/die grinder and a couple beer (come over with a 6 pack and i'll show you). However..it is still a 10MM pump...same as your stocker.

Now...i'll save you some research..

JDM Sti motors with Dual AVCS run a 12MM pump....bigger rotor etc obviously, but same casting for the rest..could deal with dremel/die grinder treatment. Flows better than the 10MM pump...goes without saying. About ~$200

The 08 STi comes with an 11mm pump and uses a much better casting, which eliminates the need for dremeling, and actually flows better/more than the 12MM pump! Can get this piece from US/Canadian Dealers. US price is about $120.

Order yourself the 08 STi pump...and order me one too.

Put an oil cooler on it. No need to worry about low oil pressure, even a stock WRX pump can handle it no problem. The plumbing required is vey short anyway. On Dave Hintz's WRX I ditched the stock water/oil heat exchanger under the oil filter and substituted an adapter block with a built in thermostat. A couple of 90 degree AN fittings come off the adapter and route the hoses up next to the timing belt cover and to the nice Mocal cooler in front of the radiator. Dave's car uses a GM V-6 oil filter mainly because that's the fitting they sent even though that's not what I ordered but at least we got a bigger oil filter out of it. It was not a direct bolt up, some tinkering needed to be done but it was not difficult. I had to weld the supplied GM oil filter threaded tube to the stock Subaru fitting that screws into the block.

Stupid question. How is this cooler plumed? Are you pulling oil from the galley through the cooler and dumping it back into the sump? I don't see how big lines would be a problem other wise. If you were to run oil from the pump through the cooler and then into the galley there would be no volume/pressure issue.

this is the best deal I've seen....oil coolers are expensive, this one is still high quality, lower cost, AND re-mounts the filter elsewhere....so its no longer next to the headers, nor underneath the engine and vulnerable to getting hit by random rally rocks

as far as the pump goes, it seems like only high rpm (+7K rpms) really *need* it. I have the 12mm sti one...don't really need it, but I guess its good insurance.

the mfactory is decent. however, still doesn't include a thermostat.

Most clever people are alot better to just go buy the Mocal Thermostat Sandwich adapter for the Subaru, and find a cooler core someplace.

Then just have a local hydraulic shop make up some lines for cheap.

Maybe I'm cheap because I drive one of those XRATTY things but I fabricated my own external oil cooler setup for much less than $350.00 without shipping. I even have a thermostat! I used an RX7 oil cooler I picked up on craigslist and sourced all of my hose, ends and fittings from the local industrial supply place. The filter head and spin on adapter I bought from Summit.

Heres a pic of what I used short a fitting or two and the spin on adapter.

The Cosworth cooler I was refering to isn't the one with just the modified relief valve it's some other spendy thing which I think is 12mm. But yeah for the stupid money you're right. I'll know how quikly I can get the 08 STi one in the morning then I'll order 2. Also remember to call me before you want something from the dealer. I gotta get out to see you soon but I just can't seem to find any time.
But I gotta get my motor in so I think I'll have to take Dave Clarks advice and just run the cooler now. Hey Dave did I ever tell you I was one of the last to see Pats first car before it left for the wreckers? Sad sad day. I heard that the guys cutting your cage apart with sawsalls set it on fire before it was crushed. Over 60 rallies on that car! You do good work.
