(Can you tell I got a digicam for christmas yet?)
Since the weather was so nice last weekend, I thought it'd be a fine time to break the engine down enough to carry into the basement from the love shed: ![]() ![]() ps, how many million dollars are these mint babies worth? ![]() |

Head bolts were a tad stubborn. Any particular reason there are metric head bolts on a largely US engine? Only took out one 13mm 12pt in the process...
![]() What's this? 030 on the pistons, looks like a rebuilt engine, perhaps I lucked out: ![]() Cylinder bores are still nicely cross-hatched, but then, so was my old 260,000km original motor. I don't remember these marks on my old pistons, hopefully this isn't a sign cast ones were dropped in by whoever did the rebuild: ![]() Hmmmmmm, were 25's stock on the 2.3, or has the crank been ground as well? ![]() More to come, but the crank pulley seems to be rusted right on and refuses all reason and prying... Yo düd, it sure as hell ain't original pistons, and they sure as hell look like cast.
Any marks you can read? You ought to sell those panty liners for enough to get some fresh forged units. Now show me the combustion chambre to be sure you got a Turbo haid. And the rods. Good thing you looked before you went and put 20 PSI to them and suffered a beeeeg fat 'splosion. Anybody got some Ford lookup tables handy to see what descriptions these correspond to?
Pistons - H559P Rods - D42E A051, Caps - D42EBA Crank - E2ZE-BA .... 8F6 Oil Pump - D42E-6604-A5 Looked through the bills I got with the car, looks like it got a new short block back in 98 at 200,000km, but they put the original head back on. Pistons have what look to be casting marks on them, which sucks. Guess I'm in the market for a 30 over forged setup now, yarg, and I thought I'd get away easy with the reman motor! |

Yarg, here's the head photos. Looks like the std turbo head, w/ heart shaped CC and D port intake, round exhaust.

Pistons are *not* a Ford part number.
Ford part numbers are awesome, they tell you in the first four letters what year the part was introduced and what chassis line it was originally for. The next four are a non-specific part number, and the last set is a revision code. A nice set of charts can be found http://www.classicmustang.com/decoding_part_numbers.htm right there. Yeah maybe the easiest thing is just a fresh--different motor although finding decent blocks with reasonable bores is getting harder. Only about 300 for a set of 4 forged from various places, 2300 IS popular. But then you'd have those pesky circlips to worry about. I think I'll stick with this block, it's a fairly recent overbore and should be in decent shape once it gets tanked. My (questionable) reasoning being if I stick with 30 over now and melt down a piston later on, I'll just need to overbore another block and get a new piston, not 4. Perhaps if I buy a rod/piston setup from you you'll put the clips in for me?
