....true....that thing hangs pretty low.
carry a spare beam with you. we had to replace one after doo wops I this year....bent the piss out of it on one of the hidden logs out in Montesano, made for an interesting stage two....we were extra sideways and couldn't figure out why until we got back to service and noticed the passenger side wheel was about 10 deg toe out in the back. Had to sledge hammer the thing into position and run the last stage that way till we got it changed that night. My crew hates me. -Tom DemonRallyTeam | Fine Tuning | CTS Turbo & RP Turbos | RalleyTuned | JRM | Meister Autowerks Spitfire EFI | Product Apparel | JVAB Imports | NLS | AP Tuning | USRT Add us on Facebook | Next Event: 2013 Olympus Rally June 22-23 Olympia, WA Edited 1 time(s). Thanks for the pic of your rear beam setup Tom.
The question I have at large is, what is the best that can be done if you are sticking with the stock fuel tank location? All I know of is to plate the hell out of the trailing arm to help it resist twisting. I've been using late model mk2 beams as-is, but wouldn't mind having some stiffening ideas in the pocket for the next beam when its time to swap again. |

If you dropped the rearward point low enough I think that the setup I have could be implemented on any car with a stock fuel tank.

I have serious doubts that Tom's setup would clear (on a MKIII anyways). The bottom of the stock beam is parallel with the gas tank at ride height. I'd have to make the mounting point so far down, it would get hung up on stuff or run into the wheel. I'm going to pull the shocks this weekend and see exactly how far they would need to hang down when the beam is under full compression. Here's some pics for discussion: Note, this car didn't use the stock gas tank And here's the damn tank that gets in the way. This is a MKII chassis -Jason |

Go to a fuel cell, google "photobucket sirlurch". Find pictures of his rear end. Build a new rear setup similarily using whatever rear hub you want. Subaru's are okay and there will be good rear disc and good spares at every rally. Just have to get the outer part of halfshaft to plug it. Problem solved and fully adjustable.

I have a couple ideas..if I can remember them long enough to type them..
![]() A: Raise the back floor and move the tank forward ala toyota/Nissan/Chevrolet and every other manufacturer. This would give you more consistant handling over the full/empty fuel cycle. B: Remove the front part of the spare tire well, move the tank bank a few inches. The spare could sit at an angle matching the rear cage backstays. It would be easier to get in and out also. I don't have a VW (thank goodness) to put on the hoist to look at so the ideas may not be applicable to real world engineering. |

Yes going to a fuel cell would be nice, but the $$ and work required to statisfy the rules are keeping me away from it. However, if I bend enough beams it will be back on the table.
Gene, good suggestions, only problem is the fuel filler neck. It is molded into the body of the tank. What you can't see from the pictures is the tank extends into the back of the rear wheel well and then up to the fuel filler door. I'm under the impression that I can't modify the oem tank at all. If I could, I'd just hack off the part that gets in the way of the front subframe working in the rear. -Jason |

Dollars spent preventing just one more DNF from a fucking rear beam bending then rubbing thru the fucked up filler neck pucking thing is worth it. How many times you boys need to think about the cost of fucking entries, gas, lodging since each individual crew member needs a solo suite, all that shit for yet another VW DNFing cause the beam bent and rubbed thru the filler neck. Jeeeezxiz haitch Christ on the Cross! Any of you galoots fawkin bothered to see if the old steel tank with the STEEL pipe is still available. FAWK!!!!! Yeah I'm thinking it ended with the MKI.
But yes that is a valid point John, What's another thousand to prevent the waste of several thousands on DNF's Ok damn it, putting the front subframe on the rear is a go! Now who's got an extra MKIII subframe, 2.0 control arms and spindles??? ![]() Plan will be to cut the floor out, put in a new tub to recess the fuel cell in and then cover it to meet the rules. -Jason Edited 1 time(s).
