Pin Style Jackstand - pin material?
December 16, 2008 10:03AM
After searching on SS.com and finding 100% conflicting advice on the pin material for pin-style stands I went looking and found this: 4340 High-Strength Shock-Resistant 4340 Alloy Steel. I forgot to measure my sockets this AM, but am pretty sure I would be using this in 3/4" diameter, solid bar. I'm planning on making the triangle "flat" stands (kinda like the Demon Tweeks works stands) using 1.5"X.120 square tube, 1/8" plated gussets for the pin at the top and maybe some 14g or 16g gussets at the bottom. I'm also considering adding a small inner foot on the bottom piece for added stability. Someone with some metal/engineering knowledge please shoot this down or I'm gonna pull the trigger and learn the hard way!

I just wrote up how I did it on specialstage like last week.

There was a big thread here or there that included such reputable people as Dave Clark's advice.

Here's the jist. 1/2" drill, 1" hole saw, 1 X 0.095 DOM tubing, 3 mm plate (could probably use thinner but it's what I always have some of thanks to being the same as the cage feet).
Drill a hole, weld the plates, weld the tube.

You can find some pretty crazy images of Cascade putting them in an Evo all fancy like. I just drilled it straight through the sill and plated both sides in the front, and just the outside in the rear. I've seen ones where people incorporate the interior plating into the cage, but really depends upon the car.

Plain old mild steel (1018/1020 if code numbers are your thing) would be fine for the pins. Cheap, easy to find and work with, Plenty strong enough to hold up the corner of a rally car and able to bend before breaking like alloy steel is wont to do.

i used plain old mild steel Rod.

I used 1" diameter, and whatever the corresponding size of DOM was to fit overtop.

Easy to find, cheap, easy to weld.

I haven't even made my pin stands yet.. but have the rods which i can quickly, easily and safely insert into the car, and lower it onto some mondo jackstands i have. Allows me adjustability..

These guys sell the stands but they're in England so the shipping would make them cost prohibitive but they have nice pictures to either work from yourself or show your fabricator.

Cheers, Ted

Mine - exact copies of the (early) SRT Canada stands.

It doesn't have to be light. If your leaving service with them in/on the rally car.... you're doing it wrong.

The diameter of the one Robin posted is 3/4" at best.

i have actually seen numerous sets of those bent, and that's why i went with 1"

Yup 3/4" Mark Williams, Martin Donnelly, Crazy Leo and myself all have the same stands. One of Martin's got bent after being run over by a service truck - otherwise no probs AFAIK.
