Wow, nice hostility. Did I miss somewhere in my post where I called you out by name or questioned your abilities? Ummm no.

But in this economy, I'd be willing to bet that some fabricators who aren't blessed with a backlog of work like yourself would be MORE THAN WILLING to come off their price point to get a deal done.

And fuck you too! smiling smiley

What you were saying in essence was "With the rough economy, some guys who make their living---and a lot more modestly than I do are probably hurting for work, so seems like a great idea to go and try and low-ball them, sorta kick them in the nuts while they're already hurting so i can get my playthings done cheaper"

That is what you were saying, realise it or not.
So solly, round eye!

Wow, someone's diaper's full.

Guess I'm the only one who knows fabbers and other skilled tradesmen who aren't too proud to realize that the economy is in the shitter and that they might have to lower their rate to get business that they might not otherwise get. It's called supply and demand, look into it.

It's Dave's fucking holier-than-thou attitude that blew this shit up in the first place. I was trying to tell Brian some tips and you took it all way out of context. I don't see you offering any advice or help other than your little tirades. Me, I offered him things he can actually use like HANS and a driving suit. You offered a little tantrum.

And by the way, I lost my job two months ago and am about to default on my mortgage so please do not fucking lecture me on the woes of the poor tradesman.

Flame away, I'm fucking over this thread.

And that statement right there is the the absolute best way to put yourself out of business. I can't even count the number of companies and contractors I've known that went slumming on price and were going to "make it up on volume", "get their foot in the door", or some other horseshit. They're all gone now...

I think a more pleasant way to put Elis advice would be to see if I might be able to barter a bit these days. Rather than try to stick it to someone responsible for the equipment that might save my ass, I might be able to negotiate or something.

Dunno. I do know that Eli got thrown under the bus jobwise a couple months back, so its not like he's out to write a check to karma here.

I appreciate the info in this thread and am trying to see if I might be able to trade some of my labor in exchange for access to equipment and guidance before summer. Might not have the cash, but I have the time. What is time worth to some people?

You're totally missing my point. My post wasn't intended to be about me but as an example to show the point of view of people who are in this business to eke out a living in general. We see this all the time, people who can't afford their hobby, or more commonly who can but choose to try to get something for free or at a huge discount because they think $2000 or whatever is too much to spend on a rollcage for their rally car. Can't afford that because they just bought some bitchin' new rims for their daily driver Evo X or STi or whatever. So the guy who is building the rollcage that might just save your life is supposed to take it in the shorts so you don't have to spend as much on your hobby? I'm not saying this is your guyses situation specifically but we see it all the time and your selfish post suggesting you lowball cage builders was insulting and hit a nerve. Judging by some of the responses I'm not the only one who feels this way. Sure, you may find someone who will work for food in these lean times but do you really want to trust your life to the lowest bidder?
When people try to pull this shit on me now I turn it back around on them. What, suddenly you don't want to pay $xx for yy work you had me do on your Porsche? You're what, a realtor? Great, I need a house but if I buy one I can afford to go racing so you should give me one. Or, you're a computer programmer? Great, write me some software for my business. Here's $50. You see where I'm going with this.

And "holier than thou attitude"? Wow, you really know nothing about me, do you? Lol!

I'm suggesting that $2000 is too much to spend on a roll cage?
I'm somehow less worthy to participate because I don't have ten large to drop on a hobby with zero payout?
I'm not supposed to have nice wheels on my daily driver?

Aw, c'mon. PLEEEEEEEEEZ! PLEEEZ CAN I HAVE NICE WHEELS (AND AND EVO OR STI TO SPORT THEM ON)?

the plan is for later this year (for the cage)...a lot of it depends on my next couple commission checks, but yeah, between the cage and your rear sub mount...lets work something out beneficial for both of us. smiling smiley
