Those are pretty cool. Nice to see LED technology getting more affordable.
My buddy Ray took a couple old KC hiliters and replaced the bulbs with landing light bulbs. Then he mounted them on his side mirrors (rallx/shenanigans car). When he lit them up, it really looked like an airplane was coming at you. Pretty cool. Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |

Nah, that's not a 1.9, it's the 1.8 SOHC that the 4WD car started with. The 1.8 BP is in my '90 323 hatchback (and getting ~37mpg@75mph). This B8 is just here for the winter. I'm taking the BP-T out of my Fraud Sexcort Wagon and will be putting it into this Mazdog sometime next year. Currently it's at 173.3hp and 172.5lb-ft at the front wheels, but will be getting a wee bit of Haltech, injector, rail, pump, bigger FMIC, and a VF10 cold-side, I'm expecting around 250whp with it, which puts it right in that perfect power/torque-to-weight ratio for a good daily driver. Then I'm going to build up a high(er) compression turbo motor with a t3 variant, and most likely megasquirt, and be pushing around 325 at the wheels in the Wagon, for lapping/track days. Or, maybe put a solidly built N/A BP into the wagon, and put the Uber-engine in one of two Mazdog Proteges (4WD, both of them), and then take it out when I run out of transmissions. the 323 hatch may eventually get a snail too, I dunno yet. Depends on if/when the wagon gets t-boned or balled up or rusted out. Now I'm rambling, and getting off-topic. I'd love to know where those lights came from, and how they would compare to the over-engineered landing lights. And I wonder if the landing lights would work in a rally application, seeing as how they're designed to be installed inside a wing behind a plexiglass/lexan/whatever cover, away from flying rocks and dust and geese. --sarge ---** To be in compliance with the Anarchy **--- Jorden R. looks like you don't even need a bar for them...just bolt them right on the front of your hood. Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ |

If you wait a few months I'm going to be making something even better. There's a new 4 die LED light that is even more efficient than the one they're using. I'm making the housings and a friend of mine is going to do the electronics. Here's the bicycle light he makes with them.

the guys at BajaDesigns/Soltek LIghting are offering LED solutions from RIGID. They also have LEDs in a more conventions format on their website https://www.bajadesigns.com/NET/C-383/LED+HEADLIGHTS

Jack,
We run four old CIBIE's. They came with the car and I think they're all the same- something with a pretty long throw. I like the idea of HID's for better lighting and less power consumption, but here in the PNW, we use them so infrequently that it really doesn't matter. Mt. Hood 2008 was the most we've used them in a long time. For mounting, I highly recommend something easy to remove. Sooner or later you're going to smack something with the nose, or someone in front of you is going to throw a rock up. It won't cost you much more money to mount them on a bar and you'll have fun designing that. Do it. ps. Our car is on the third front bumper in 6 years, but we have the same (pretty expensive lights) that we've always had. Doug |

Any updates on the 'something even better'? It's ice season again, which means night-time events once more! ![]() ![]() (click for larger, if you like) I think my existing el-cheapo Autozone lights are crap.. the reflectors are black in some spots (horrible seal for the lenses), and a couple of them don't work. I think the constant vibration just kills the filaments. --sarge ---** To be in compliance with the Anarchy **--- Jorden R. Kleier Baraboo, Wisconsin, USA 1990 Mazdog Protege 4WD 1973 |

i've got some Bosch 225s - GREAT light, - would like to put HID in there, two 100w bulbs are hot.
i also had one of the nuts rattle loose and fall off the car, and under the skid plate. you can see how expensive they are here - along with some good info on tractor lighting. I want to mount the next set with RAM mounts. a sturdy aluminum ball coated with rubber, super easy to aim, super sturdy, super easy to remove. just have 4 wired balls hanging on the hood waiting for the lights. you can get them from marine and hwy joints, they are used to hold laptops, fish finders, bus driver equipment . . . rated for HEAVY! PS - The landing lights look slick, but how do they do rules wise - bulb vs lamp, somewhere it said something about an even number of bulbs. I actually just found a good deal on some 35W H3 HIDs,
I've got 2 6" 100W pencil beams in the middle, that use H3 bulbs. Then two 5.75" 55W "driving lights" that also take H3 bulbs. I'm not sure if I want to change out the 100W bulbs, which point forward a long ways, or the 55's, which point to the sides. I'm thinking to the sides, since on the ice I tend to spend most of the time just a bit sideways. Hell, I should just get all four of them as HIDs. Regarding the LED landing lights, and an "even number of bulbs"... Technically, there aren't any bulbs there, just some diodes. That happen to emit light... But, if they're interpreted as bulbs, I don't think they make them in an uneven number, at least most of the ones I've seen are always even. With the RAM mount, are you talking these? ![]() What about the part that would hook onto the light, the 'socket' part? I thought they had kind of big honkin' handle to tighten them up, do you think it might rattle/vibrate loose? Would you just use some safety wire on it to ensure it doesn't loosen up after you get it set up? --sarge ---** To be in compliance with the Anarchy **--- Jorden R.
