You can get these in non-sealed beam too. There is a separate bulb inside which is not replacable, but does not fail when the lens cracks. I say "when" because they will shatter on your first water crossing. No biggie if they aren't sealed beam.

YOu can get 'em in 100W too from Aircraft Spruce, etc.

What fun is 100W? I can get 100W Hellas, and I don't have to reinvent the mounts for those. No, if I'm figuring out how to mount goofy airplane lights, I'm going for the POWER!

Funny story (for me at least): My last race in the 510, Gorman a few years ago (last year with the Rim roads, whenever that was), and we were at a remote service getting ready for the only two night stages of the race. We had been out of the scene for a few years and some new guy we'd never seen before was beating us. We went over to check out his (very nice) golf and chat a bit.

Then, when we were sure the guy was paying attention, I asked my co-driver if he had put the light pod on yet. He gave me this look of shock, and tole me he forgot to put it in the service truck. "oh no!" i say "we'll have to drive on the regular headlights!"

Yea, we don't have a light pod...

No idea if the guy actually slowed down because of this, but we put the hammer down on those night stages and took the win.

Now for the other question about LED lites. Truckers have discovered a disadvantage with LED taillights. They don't get hot enough to melt snow/ice that accumlates on them. Same problem for forward facing lights,I'd guess. I suppose that's not a real problem for you West Coast types, but it is in places I play.

I'm trying to figure out if the disassembly of a KC light allows you to surface mount the bezel and still hold the lamp in place. Or find rings for any of their crap.

Anyone actually had success going this route? Slapping some KC lenses and reflectors in the pod would rock since price is right.

I've found two references to KC part numbers:

9550 RALLY RING FOR KC PAR 56 LENS/REFL
9551 RALLY RING FOR PIAA LENS/REFL

Any idea what light sizes these rings would fit for? Pricing is right for the rings (~$40). I'm trying to figure out what lights are par-56 compatible that are in KC's product line but it's not clear (and yes, I've got an email into them!)

Speaking of pods, anyone have a (rough) list of what's required to support one of these bad boys? My McMaster searching is a little subpar. Here's what I've figured out so far:

Spherical end joint
Threaded rod
Clevis joint
Quick release pin

But - what would you call the mounting plate that receives the spherical joint, as well as the mounting plate that receives the clevis joint? (I can't seem to find out what the heck these little hinge thingies are called. (And yes, I searched for receiver and plates - didn't see anything.

Thoughts?

We use DZUS side-latch fasteners.

Here are some ball sockets and ball studs for the bottom of your support rod:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#ball-sockets/=61kiqa
Get the quick release steel one, it has M6x1 threads. Then the 10mm stud goes in your bumper sticking out forward.
And then something like this that you can just bolt right through your pod with some washers:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#rod-ends/=61kn53
You can probably pick up some regular 1/4" steel rod from a hardware store for a couple bucks, then just cut to length and thread the ends.

Dzus slide latches for mounting the pod to the hood.

Some nice pods I've seen have a piece of aluminum that goes under the front of the hood, like it grabs on to the hood, to add some additional support.

Yeah, I thought about the quick-release ball option. Not sure of the angle of the pod. If it's more or less vertical, it'll be fine. If it's more angled, I figured a clevis-type rig would work, eg:
