RWD- what type diff
February 01, 2009 07:37PM
for rally purposes, on gravel stages with tarmac transits... what type of differential for RWD??? Posi Limited Slip work okay? will that allow me to do some spectacular turn exit drifts?

First of all, you shouldn't be drifting out of the turn, you should be drifting into it. If you're sideways coming out then you messed it up and are losing time. tongue sticking out smiley Not that I've ever done such a thing...

Second of all, how about a little more info. What type of car? Generally clutch type LSD is best.

How bout your name and location? We like to know who we are talking to.

I think that the general consensus will be that a clutch type limited slip diff is the way to go. If we knew what type of car you have we could recommend something. JVL likes the Toyota Supra diffs for Volvos. I like the Gripper or Kaaz for VWs.

was thinking how to take an AWD car and make it RWD. 2.3L duratec and ford ranger bits might work okay. there is a posi LSD for the ford 8.8" rear. just dreaming.

Why not take a RWD car and make it RWD? I know it's not as cool, but come on, it's the lazy man's way!

PS - I hate 8.8 rears. They're Ford's copy of a GM design and the GM design was crap too. By the time you fix the problems it has, you'd be better off with a 9" or Toyota 8" (did I say that?) which has all of those problems sorted out for you from the get-go.

Pete, please detail why the ford 8.8 which has seen service in the Moosestang for years and years is junk?

Because Ford is cheap.
John V needs to chime in here. He can detail all the reasons why they suck compared to good stuff.

cause an Outback Sport with the dual spoilers on the hatch would be a good candidate. i'm so tired of STi swaps. if built right you could do burn-outs everywhere. all the subaru junkies would wonder what motor was in it becuase it "doesnt sound like a subaru" mostly because it would be something different.

Other than the weld coming apart (which is just wear and tear on a welded diff)

The Dana 30 has been durable and I believe the same one has been in the Colt since the late 80's when JVL helped build the car...

It has C clip axles, the diffs available for it have to be able to accomodate this so they only have two spider gears and one diff pin (instead of four and a cross like even my Mazda has, and yours too if you still have it), and on a personal level, any diff that adjusts the side load by having to ram shims in there is heinous.

You can fix the C clip axles with C clip eliminators, which leak, and aren't designed for side loads anyway, so the proper thing to do is cut off the axle ends and weld on 9" ends and use custom axles, and you're kinda stuck for diffs unless you use a spool or accept that you have a cheesy design that relies on the gears pushing each other apart for clutch actuation.

And you still have a service-unfriendly bearing setup (but then I *am* biased here). After all that work, you could have had something better.

This is where some people chime in and say "I've had no problems with my C clip axles"... good for you. I've seen too many broken axles leave the car to ever want a vehicle infected with them.

You will need a different differential and probably custom halfshafts if you want to rally on a RWD Subaru. Find Randy Zimmer's account of making his NA 2.5RS into RWD and if he'd try it again. If I recall correctly, I think first it was diff, then CV, then he said forget it.

Yeah the MkIII MA70, third gen Toiletta Stuprah rear axle is a stout 8" axle and it's made by the same supplier as does Sub-arat and sNissan and for that matter Misterbitchy rear axles.
It has the huge advantage that there are several aftermarket suppliers of ring and pinions and so they cost from 140-180 bucks.
No other Japanese axle can you get new gears for so low a price.

I got one Rallyanarchista his ring and pinion for 10 bucks on E-Bay

MkIII Stuprahs are recognised by the 5 bolt wheels and the 6 bolt flanges on the outputshafts.
