Thank you for the reply.

My gut told me to stay away from that Dewalt one. Your post was full of good info. I just read your garage modification thread today, so I see what type of compressor you are talking about.

And yes, I hate doing things twice.

Daniel,

Staying away from cheap compressors is a good idea smiling smiley From my research, you're very hard pressed to find a good automotive compressor at the usual home supply stores.

If you think getting 240V into your garage is a problem, it's actually pretty easy --especially if you have an unfinished basement--. And you will want that if you want to run a decent welder anyways. 110 migs are toys at best.

I don't know how proficient you are with electricity.. It's simple stuff. There are a few rules to keep in mind aside from common sense. If it's a problem, you might persuade me to come up and do it/show you how. I worked as an electrician's apprentice for a couple summers and work with 600v regularly and 4160v on occassion.

The dude I bought my compressor from..

He had a newer, prettier one with the same basic specs.. a little more money. I'd imagine he might still have it. If you want his contact info, let me know.

Personally, If I were to buy a compressor tomorrow, I'd be looking for an
Emglo with a 4 cylinder pump, 5HP 180 series motor and 30 gallon tank. The
last one I had made 24 CFM at 90 psi...

Macropoxy 646

http://www2.sherwin-williams.com/im/powergeneration/macropoxy646fastcure.asp?nav=Products

I got it at the Sherwin Williams paint store on Caledonia at Lawrence. The guy who recommended it painted the underside and interior of his off-road jeep with the stuff.

I am very happy with it. It has come off in a few places, but i did get a little lazy with the prep work, and i remember these being problem spots.

Awsome!

I spoke to them yesterday and they were recomending some hideously expensive primer to be used in conjunction with a more expensive topcoat. I'll be happier getting what you recomended, knowing that it has been 'rally proven'.

Actually...

I spent last week wiring the basement (our house has been under construction since we moved a year and a bit ago). I ran 240v out to a new subpanel in the garage so I can get the MIG box going and attempt some stich welding. Adding another recepticle for an aircompressor would be easy.

Thanks for the offer to help.

PM sent regarding contact info for the dude selling the compressor.

They did truthfully recommend using a top-coat ontop of this stuff, as they mentioned it would "yellow" under UV rays. However being on the underside of the car, i didn't really care much.

as i say..i do need to do some touch up, which i will get around to. but generally it has held up pretty well.

Steve,

I had space problems, so hence the tiny tank.

It sure sounds like that compressor would get the job done!

I think basic rule of thumb should be that if your compressor can't do 10+ cfm @ 90 PSI it's not going to make you a happy boy in the garage.

If I understand correctly, you've been using the original coating for at least a year of use? If so, that's better than I expected! Touch-ups don't bother me at all.

I just spoke with them and I'll be getting some today - not a bad price at all...

Thanks

You got it....Tall Pines, Black Bear, Baie, Galway, Tall Pines, PN...etc.

It's also seen trackdays, drifting, etc.

As long as the surface is prepped WELL! you'll have no problems. What the guys did tell me is right, if your panel flexes a bit, the paint is likely to crack. However my floor boards have been bent up under the seats and i've hammered them down..and it cracks a little but stays stuck.

The parts that have peeled off..i'm 100% sure it's because of my prep. I didn't go as nuts as you with the Wire Wheel, and just painted over some junk.

Little bit of a disclaimer...my floor boards HAVE had HDPE on them...so that helped a little bit.

But the Wheel wells have held up really well.

I think it was like $140 for effectly 2 gallons of paint (1 part paint, 1 part hardener). I used like half of it, and i everything underneath the car. Wheel wells, floor boards, rocker panels, bottom half of the engine bay, and front frame rails. I put on 3 pretty generous coats. Put on a thin coat first...let it get tacky...then you can absolutely LAY the stuff on there...really good and thick.

The Emglo I described would fit in the same space as the one
you have now, You can hold a blower nozzle open and the damn
thing will cycle off and on...
