You could also spray chasis foam stuff in there. Will make it stronger and prevent rust.

That was brought up in another thread.

Wasn't it voted down for likely hood to burn when welding near it in teh future and trapping moisture??? or am I remembering wrong?

Yeah, Timmy just like styrofoam cups and coolers and helmet lining absorbs moisture.

Sure is odd how coffee can sit in a cup for weeks and only go down from evaporation.

Open up a closed foam filled compartment on a boat sometime. If there was ever water in there it will still be there. Foam will still allow moisture in and it will capture it against the metal. Rust will still happen. Drill a hole on the inside somewhere and spray in a bunch of zinc primer, or forget about it. Chances are a rally car will die an honorable death before rust destroys new hidden metal anyway.

Ok, now you're just pissed at me.

Ever work in a body shop? I used to restore classic cars. We pulled foam out of cars RUSTED to death. Why? It soaks moisture.

And for the record, Styrofoam isnt the same stuff. Coffee cups, coolers, and helmets are a completely different polymer. Styrofoam is polystyrene, most expanding foams are polyurethanes.

However, if you WANT to fill your car's rockers with coffee cups and cooler bits, go right ahead.

Alfa Romeo used to use foam-stuff in their Alfa Sud's - being the genuine Alfa article they had no trouble rusting all by themselves, but the foam filled bodyparts like rockers, etc., rusted even faster...

I wouldn't do it...

I like the idea of drilling a small hole and spraying zinc stuff...

And, yeah, I probably will destroy the shell before it has a chance to rust. but IF the thing only sees three rallys in three years because of $$$, I don't want to think about it rusting out in the meantime. Trees, rocks, rollovers... I can handle loosing a shell to them - rust, not so much.

Thanks everybody.

Well, the shell goes in for its cage this coming weekend. when it comes home, it's paint time.

My question for the day is: Seam-sealer - what's the deal?

What's the purpose? Do I use it JUST to keep the dust out of the cabin... Can I use it to keep moisture out of the seams for rust prevention... will that just trap salt/sand/moisture...

I guess I'm asking why the OEM uses it and what I should/can be using it for in the rally car.

I'm not familliar with the application process as well, I'm assuming it's just sold in tubes like grease or caulking (?) and I just clean the seam and squish it in... any suggestions/tips?

Thanks for the help.

Seam sealer is sticky stuff.
One trick is to wet the tip of your finger with some dish soap when you go smearing it around. That way it doesnt stick to your finger and you can press it into the seams good.
And yeah, it comes in tubes for a caulk gun.

So, is the idea to put seam sealer back into all the seams I removed it from?

And, do I put this on self etching primer... paint... ?

Told my father in law about the 646, who just so happens to be an industrial painter for state of WA. His comments were, great stuff and should kick ass, he did say it will yellow at some point and that just depends on the obvious. Our idea was to have the stuff color matched as close as possible to the top coat and still run a top coat over it, Base+clear but this should make for awesome wheel wells and underside protection. Im not doing a rally car but a road race car, so ours will see less rocks but still needs to be a strong finish.
