I have allays had a fear that welded diffs would lead to more broken drive shafts but I have no proof this is true.

Good rally cars all basically cost the same, does not matter if you start with a 240, mk3 or Mk2, or XR4ti. The variations in parts costs are rounding errors when looking at the total time and cost of building, campaigning AND maintaining a rally car.

The higher the build spec the closer in cost all models get.

I once built out budgets for several car models and found the variation from most to least investment at a good club level spec car was less then 10%.

I forgot to add, I liked the golf as a rally car - I had a lot of good times and fun tossing it down stages even in basically stock form.

No Dave Clark, aka Doivi Clarkalainenen ( a name he was blessed with way back in maybe 1987 at one of his if not his first events entered when, taking advantage of he running around all last minute chicken-with-head-cut-off I says to Dave and his co-driver Gary Reynolds "You guys get the car ready, I'll take care of sign up for you. You can trust me, I'm not like the others...."
So I Finnicized Dave's to some version of the above, and Gary Reynolds became "Kari
Roinalainainen" on the entry form---and so the results---and the season points were recorded. I eveen had a 'SF' country disc sticker I put on the car.

Robert lives a few blocks from me, he works around the corner from Dave's shop he occasionally drops in at, Dave is rebuilding his nice (rwd) 79 or whatever Opel AsconaB and I've rebuilding an engine to yet yummier spec than when I did an engine for Dave back in '87.
It's one big Peyton Place around here, relationships and entanglements going back more than 22 Years.

Yeah, you remember what else happened? At the end of the season championship results "Dave Clark" had something like 12 points and "Doivi Clarkinen" had something like 7 points (I forget the real totals) instead of Dave Clark having 19 points (or whatever.) Oops!

Don't forget you also taught me a bunch of good Finnish swear words so I could really act the part. "Perkele! I am haffing punktoors all morning!"
