Everything Starlet!
March 05, 2009 04:23PM
So brakes are done and drove the car today to work. Feel like it's 1985! I love the car. Anyhow, what's available for suspension and bushings? The car feels like a 28 year old car for sure! Suspension is definitely next on the todo list. That and gutting the interior and seeing how much rust there actually is. LSD would be awesome too.

Do the struts run all the way down into the knuckle?
Get me the OAL of the back shocks, and tell me if the fuckers are typical Japanese eyelet bottom/pin top mounting.

Yeah, stupid pin design in rear. Nothing that can't be fixed. I was just saying to Mark about two hours ago how I need to send the front stuff up to you to get something made and mod like you've done for the Corolla boys.
That's another thing you and William should make. Adjustable camber plates for the Merkur that aren't $550!!!
Mark's drawing up some adjustable bars for the rear. The car needs rubber everywhere. You can actually feel the whole drivetrain shift when you get on the throttle!
Weight is around 1700 lbs. Frame rails look good, but has some surface rust. Goal is always for it to just be a fun daily driver so not planning to spend a bunch of money on it, but suspension and a $50 paint job are definitely in order! Have enough steel in the garage to do a basic cage, but I know it'll quickly go downhill from there. I already have one cool rally car, though Mark did point out there's nothing wrong with having two. smiling smiley

Grant you can swap in the AE86 corolla struts in front and a ae86 rear end with lsd in the back. It widens the track by an inch or so you have to run wheel flares. But it's the best/cheapest option I know of. It's a bolt in affair.

The rear diff from an AE86 is not a direct bolt on. The links are mounted differently on the Starlet.

That's what I understood about the AE86 rear. The other idea for the front was to use adjustable Merkur front bits with the compression strut replacing the control arm since all the dimensions between the Merkur and the starlet for the arms are really close. You'd just have to flip sides and put the driver's side on the passenger side. But if the Merkur gets sold, I'll figure something out. This is just a cheap daily driver, but I want it to be kinda fun to drive too.

Dont bother using ae86 rear ends, there small, super overpriced, and hard to find.

There's usually one or two in the junkyards here surprisingly. And two over at one friends shop. Regardless, seems like something like a Truck rear end or whatever all the crazies are putting on the back end of a Vulva would be a good option.

Anything bigger would be better. I'm running a 7.5 supra rear end.

I love the old Escort manual. Here's an excerpt:
Now on to the big time stuff. If you are lucky enough to have a decent
budget, you ought to have the best (apart from the fact that you no longer
have excuses for not winning).

Yup. Width and final drive is all I really care about. Spent the last hour or so looking at all the four link threads on here over the years...

Re: Everything Starlet!

Johns right, its basically a diff with tubes and then little flanges to bolt wheels too. I chopped off the old, staggered 4 link mounts and welded a new bracket i made on. I'll see if I have some pics, I dont think I do, though. Not of anything useful.

the crappy thing is the supra rear end is like 1-2 inches wider then an ae86 rear end, which you said is wider then the starlet?

FLARES!

Maybe its not a bad thing?
