project xr
March 11, 2009 12:24PM
thought I would post my project and what im doing to it I went to doo wops and got
stoked out of my mind and want to get it moving i have way to many resources to
just let it sit next to my black xr this is going to be my first xr cage and
mounting so input would be killer I plan on doing a new stand alone computer it it
since theirs no motor harness in the car. I will throw in plenty of pics soon just
need some sort of motivation!! and if any of you have tips on reinforcements I
haven't seen yet that would be awesome too. I'm half tempted to move the motor and
tranny back 4 inches with a new removable tunnel but that just an idea.

Not worth the effort. Weight balance isn't too bad and the firewall would need modded to move anything back which is not legal in rally.

Reinforce the front strut tops somehow. Double skin, use your VW to Subaru mounts, or something of that nature. Mimic the Subaru WRC front top mounts. smiling smiley

Ford didn't. I asked some guy named Blomqvist or Bloomintwist or something about that specifically.

Yeah cause we're as bad as the current WRC losers.

Have you had some problems with the top mounts?

No I've not had any problems with the current ones, other than them rattling loose over time.

The paint is broken all around the base of the 'volcano' or whatever you want to call it. That's why I say double skin it, which I plan to do eventually before the next full stage rally if I still own the car at that point.

Finish the rear beam setup.

Tubular front crossmember. Adjustable front suspension with a front mounted ARB.

Independent rear suspension using a Toyota diff, custom adjustable arms, and Subaru uprights.

Convert the front to a better, more widely available upright with a good bearing setup, aftermarket brake and suspension support, and ability to easily make an adjustable control arm. Evo or Subaru are the first ones that would come to mind.

What's wrong with Sapphire knuckles?

William, I've got tons of pictures of the Merkur Sierra Cosworth 4x4 I built for the Shraders back in 1998. No expense spared, lots of Group A parts, it was pretty cool. Probably $60,000 in parts went into that car. The pics are in analog form but you should come down to my shop sometime. You could get some ideas.

Thanks I will have to take you up on that, what did they do for a dash? I don't want
to do anything merker engine management wise so eliminating the dash and making a
sheet metal dash is what I'm opting for I'm kinda set in that choice but if you know
any tricks?

They? Dave used a standard dash. Added to it what he wanted, cut a bit away where it was needed to clear the tubes.

Same as 99.9% of people---because there's nothing to be gained--no time, no speed, no ease of fab, no nothing to be gained in a car which HAS a dash in throwing that away, the making some ---any--replacement.

In some 100% tube frame thing maybe then bending up some sheet metal is worthwhile, but the only thing more worthless in terms of investment of time and return of nothing in a car that already has dash is maybe doing door panels.

So you can have lots of spares, you don't have to worry about bending the rear beams, you have full adjustability instead of none, you have easy brake options, you have good final drive and limited slip options.

I don't know anything about the Sapphire knuckle. Other than I don't have any of them, and other than getting a bigger bearing, it still leaves you with the fixed stock camber. There is excellent options however for brakes and suspension on the front of these cars already from JVAB. It's the lack of adjustability that's my real complaint and why we've focused more on making adjustable arms that use the stock upright, but could easily use the Sapphire as well. But if you ever hope to sell any parts to US folk, it has to work with US stuff out of the box.

> You have too much time on your hands or too much

It's time right now. I was just throwing out the ideas that we've had. Once I have some more money I'll start actually doing some of these ideas. We're already on the look out for a Merkur shell that we can cut up into pieces. I've got a live in engineer that wants to design and build things. Our current project is to find a new rear beam, reinforce it so I stop bending it, and fit the Supra diff into it. The adjustable arms will probably be prototype made in May or June and tested so we can run them in Idaho.

Yeah, what he said. It's not like the stock dash is especially heavy or anything. Just cover it in anti glare material. I did make a center console thingy to mount all the circuit breakers and whatnot.
