So for the peons such as myself that run on 91 Octane fuel because they can't afford the race gas, are the $3-6 Octane booster things you get at Autozone worth using while racing? I'm not having any horsepower boost delusions, but I'm wondering if it could more or less act as a bit of insurance against engine ping or something?
The ones I looked at were the "street legal, cat safe" ones.

Don't blow your money at the "speed shop" by buying octane booster there.

Go to the paint store and buy a 5 gallon pail of Toluene or better yet to a chem supply place and buy a 55 gallon drum.

That is if you want to increase octane more economically.

Edit :

Xylene also boosts octane

don't waste your money.

When they say "raises your octane X points"

it means it raised the octane 0.x points

Here's a pretty informative link on various types of octane boosters :

It costs nearly as much to buy toluene to be effective as race fuel. We used to go to the airport and buy 100 low lead pretty cheap.

I'll place all the credibility my 15 year old unused BSc in Chemistry affords me on the line by saying this guy is completely and utterly batshit crazy -- zero merit. It's morons like this that make me think there needs to be a "science Snopes".

Cheers, Ted

I'm pretty sure that Mythbusters "busted" the acetone "enhancement" as pure bullshit.

Gene,

I remember the days when you could roll up to the pumps at the airport with every gas jug you had in the back of your pick up! Good times! 100LL is hellish expensive these days. Oddly, the cheapest avgas is in Chehalis.

I prolly don't really want to know...how much is it?

We were buying Turbo Blue last year for about $6 a gallon I believe. It was cheaper than Trick was in Seattle at the pumps. I think they figured it out because it's about double this year. Scrutineering is a very affordable way to rally smiling smiley

Gene,

I haven't been flying in over a year. I checked the price of 100LL at Pt. Townsend just now and it said $3.99! Central Aircraft repair in Chehalis, KCLS, has 100LL for $3.37!!!!! Now if we could just get on the ramp......Oh wait, I just got a TWIC card, I can get on the ramp!

I was looking at renting an airport hangar. 10 miles outside of town (which means 10 miles closer to CORE and testing), 50X50 for $330 per month. But you have to prove to the airport authority that you own a plane, even if it's not currently stored there. Guess I'll keep looking...

We were saying last night that we'd just grab one of the spare Subaru blocks laying around and putting it in the middle and saying it's the start of our airplane.
